@LyallThomas Heard they've been backed in meeting MS's asking price and it's done to persuading player..

@Jonny_2607 not a chance

@LyallThomas Fair dos just what was passing through. Upwards of £23m does seem too steep anyways

Lyall Thomas ‏@LyallThomas 14m14 minutes ago
@Jonny_2607 he wouldn't sign for Tottenham. Sideways step.
Well that just confirms my thoughts about him.

Morons might, e.g. Lyall.

Right now it is a sideways step. Both in Europa, neither likely to be in Champions League soon. We are a bigger club, but if his ambition is Champions League then that is irrelevant.

Never believed that we had matched the asking price anyway, the press would have been all over it if we had.

In competitions he'd play in next season - absolutely, it'd be a sideways step. In every other way imaginable, it's a big step up.

Imo, Southampton were this season's equivalent to last season's Everton - they performed well under a new manager, but I reckon they'll falter in the upcoming season.

I don't think we're being that active in pursuit of him, I reckon we know he has grander plans.

To a player like MS it would certainly seem to be. To outsiders, or fans, of course it isn't.

I am sorry that`s a complete joke to any normal thinking football fan or player would know Southampton to Spurs is not a sideways step!!

Also this Champions league think is nonsense it is about joining a club with the potential to play at the highest level and we could be in the champions league places next season and one of the current top 4 could drop out.. It has happened twice in recent times and could easily have happened twice more at least.

These guys are signing for 5 years.. look at Liverpool.. Lallana signed and they were in the Champions league and now they are in the Europa. Schniederlin should look at Spurs in a positive way in that he will play most games and with him there is great chance of winning a cup and a top 4 finish. I think Levi would need to convince him that other top players are coming in though..

We're in a better position than Southampton. Not only would we be able to offer him more money, but we are consistently able to compete in both the league and Europa League. Player for player whilst they aren't too far away, i'd say if you transfer MS from them to us, then it's pretty clear who the better side is.

Surely if he's intelligent enough and rates himself highly enough then he can see the makings of a top side developing if he were to join.

Regarding Thomas i'm not sure he knows anything, think he's just stating his opinion there.

Bigger Club
Better Wages
Constantly in Europe and still competing for Top 4/5 when in Europe whilst this will be Southampton's first go
Closer to Top 4 than Southampton

The only thing that is sideway step for this upcoming season is that we are both in Europa, that's it. We are closer to Top 4 and getting CL than Southampton. Fuck, Schneiderlin's never even played European club competition football.

So if we're a sideways step I suppose having a better squad, finishing above them for however long, having a higher wage budget, larger fan base, bigger market value, better training facilities and a new stadium on the way counts for nothing. Not to mention being more successful throughout history. Tottenham + Schneiderlin is a lot closer to top four than Southampton + Schneiderlin.

Next year will be our 6th consecutive year playing European football - only Chelsea, ManCity, and Arsenal can say the same.

Soton had a nice season, and they are in Europa - but they will be lucky to be top-10 next season, assuming they qualify for the group stages in Europa. They are no different than Everton, or Swansea, or Newcastle, or Fulham, or Stoke, or Villa before them as teams who made a 1-year foray into Europa before falling back under the added rigours.

lol he was begging to sign for us not long ago, now we are a sideways move, crock of shit Thomas, i won't listen to him anymore tbh. I don't believe we will sign him though for the reason being our tight arse owner and chairman.

neither have the clout or ambition to break the top 4, both in Europa, so measuring it where the clubs are now not such a surprise .....

So much defeatism being written here recently... Football is the greatest game because the little guy always has a potential to beat the big guy!

Last season only Chelsea where a level above everyone else. Man Utd despite spending £200 million needed Spurs and Liverpool to basically give them 4th place.. It`s not only about money, with good spending, good development of young players, team spirit and good management you have a chance. Sure if you spend more you have a bigger chance but it`s not a guarantee.

We may have started neotiations and they did change their minds but the bottom line is he was not for sale at the point we were trying to buy him. If we got in early before they sold half their team we probably would have got him but you snooze you lose
Agreed, never again will we trust a club that we have an agreement with and do the decent thing by letting the player finish his world cup before we finalise personal terms and sign the contract.
I'm pretty sure we wouldn't have done it with a few clubs then but thought Southampton were honourable we were wrong, they weren't.

Spurs being a sideways step to Southampton is like people and media claiming that Liverpool are still a Top 5 even though only finished in Top 5 once in past 5 seasons or so.
