Which is why Deco clearly takes the prize as, when I made my original post, he was talked about as being world class by most.

The bloke arrived at Chelsea with a bit of fanfare, but has since proved my point I believe.

Henry was a great player, Messi a world class player. Gerrard is over rated but not to the level that Deco was/is

Totti is a good shout as is Ibrahimovich, got to say I fully believe Gerrard is world class for Liverpool but just can't do it for England...

C. Ronaldo is massively over-rated for me, he scored so many goals for Utd due to their style of play and the alteration of the offside rule...

I agree Rondaldo is over-rated too. He's a fantastic player but to say he's the best in the world in nonsense. For all his show boating he never goes through players like Messi can.

You could say but look at the goals that he scores blah blah, but look at Zidane. He wasn't the most prolific goalscorer but was easily the best player of his generation in my eyes.

So over rated that Madrid, already, are relying heavily on him for goals. No coincidence that they lost on the weekend when he was not in the team.....

So is he the best player in the world? That was my issue not that he's not a brilliant player. It just annoyed me when pretty much all Man Utd fans i know would say he is the best.

Agree re Deco but told you sos are a bit unnecessary, it's a mentality thing I think rather than being technically 'over-rated' which is what I inferred from your post. I was more talking about Gerrard, Terry, Lampard and Rooney but the term over rated is a bit wooly and too elastic. If someone says, for example, one or all of those players are the best players ever then automatically they are over rated.

One player who receives a lot of plaudits and is often bracketed with King and Rio when he is nowhere near as good is Carragher. I think he is nowhere near as good as most Livepool and many non-Liverpool pundits think. You see it when he plays against top opposition, he looks out of his depth as he did against Drogba (someone who was stupidly criticised when he arrived here) Sunday.

Ronaldo has already broken records at Madrid and they did look toothless Sunday, though they often do down in Seville. If you are going for a Messi-Ronaldo debate, it's a judgement call I think. Both are fantastic and both, with Messi improving ever so much recently, are effective at making and scoring goals. Just because Ronaldo doesn't 'go past' players as much as Messi hardly makes him a weaker player. Messi doesn't strike a ball or head a ball like Ronaldo...they are different stylistically and athletically.

I am not sure who is better, if either, but I think a lot of people decide Messi is better because Ronaldo is an annoying shit with a massive ego that takes him to LA and Vegas to act like The Man whereas Messi is a humble, modest lad who doesn't throw himself all over the place or walk around in pink trunks and matching man bags.

On the pitch, they are pretty parallel in terms of talent and application.

I would say that he's the best.

I think most people tend to believe it's Ronaldo vs. Messi for best player in the world, and personally, I think that Ronaldo just edges it. Messi has marginally better close control, but Ronaldo is quicker, stronger and a better finisher. He can also head the ball. His goal record is similar to Messi's (at Man Utd. and Real) in a more defensive league than La Liga, and both he and Messi have 5 in 5 in the league.

Personally, I think a lot of people under rate Ronaldo because they don't like his personality.

Messi in a few years time will be incredible i think and he has two years on Ronaldo. He looks the closet thing to Maradonna i've seen who for me was the best ever.

There is so much bullshit in this thread it's untrue: 'C Ronaldo is up there with Pele and Maradona'. 'Messi can't pass or shoot'. 'Gerrard would be better than the barca mids if put in there.'

Christ. I can't take it.

What so C Ronaldo isn't as good as Pele or Maradona?!?

raul. when has he scored 20 goals even in the last 10 years.

paul scholes. cant tackle, has no pace, doesnt score 10+ goals a season ever.

There are some monumentally retarded views in this thread, but this one pretty much tops them all. Paul Scholes is one of the finest players of them last two decades, and according to Zidane is technically the best player he has ever faced.

Edgar Davids : ""Every one of us (midfielders) is just trying to become as good as him. Everyone can learn from Paul Scholes."

Cesc Fabregas : "He is the one whose level I aspire to. He is the best player in the Premier League."

Patrick Vieira : "The player in the Premiership I admire most? Easy - Scholes."

Thierry Henry : "I can't understand why Scholes has never won the player of the year award. He should have won it long ago. Maybe it's because he doesn't seek the limelight like some of the other 'stars'."

Zinedine Zidane : "My toughest opponent? Scholes of Manchester. He is the complete midfielder."

Zinedine Zidane : "Scholes is undoubtedly the best midfielder of his generation."

The scholes one was the actual one that infuriated me beyond belief. Thank you for this post, it proves what morons we have on here.

all depends on what your version of overrated is. for example i hear all the time that rooney is 'world class' - i dont think he is,hes a very good forward but not world class. i would have drogba, torres or even a motivated adebayor ahead of him up front.
for me glen johnson is an overrated player. he is a good player but his defending is not good enough to be considered a top right back. suppose i hang around with a fair few pool fans so maybe thats why i hear about him so often but match of day lads seem to hold him in high regard as well. he is a good player but (and bias in this one) i wouldnt have him ahead of charlie, sagna and maybe bosingwa as well

I don't disagree with the fact you could view certain forwards ahead of Rooney up front, although all but one of your choices (Drogba) are questionable. However, that said, Rooney is unique, and in my opinion, a 1 of a kind, world class player.

its just a hard thing to try quantify. for me rooney is one step below world class. i would never argue that he isnt an exceptional player but i dont get the world class bit, then again hes still young (ish) and will no doubt improve.
but then is that overrated? because i would have him maybe one step down from world class so people saying hes one step better then i think he is probably isnt enough to him being overrated.

as for the other strikers well thats for a pub debate over some tasty
