Come on, be fair, Naughton isn't a terrible player, he's just an outstandingly average player who shouldn't be in the running for a starting place in a team trying to get into the upper echelons. He was a free gift with the Walker transfer, granted, but if we don't get a more accomplished RB to either back up or challenge Walker for his place then we're dooomed.

imvho honest opinion its walker that should be back up to a top notch new right back signing, thats the smart move.. walker is a one trick pony with shit for brains,, he came on scene few seasons back and was fantastic but teams have ored him out and no where near as effective and he cant deal with it cos he is not intelligent enough. he certainly has not progressed and it sticks out a mile. without his pace alot of spurs fans wud be seriously slaughtering him but he has the pace and is strong and for that he would provide good competition for a real top right back.

As for naughton , he is a championship player . does nothing and today just sums him up as player. pathetic performance, no real hunger or desire, constantly passing it backwards, no ability to drive pass or take on player.crossing woeful...id sell him at first chance we got for whatever he is that bad.

I thought that Naughton has been quite decent, recently. He's an okay RB, just not a very good left back, which is understandable... It's not as if he's going to play often in the PL on a regular basis because Walker is normally one of the players you can rely on to not spend ages on the treatment table

Dean Austin looked shit in a shit team. Naughton looks shit in a team wanting top 4. Naughton is better but not by much.

The best in that time? I can't make up my mind between Carr, Chimbonda or Corluka. Probably Carr

Dean Austin was an inspirational figure for me when I was a kid. I felt that if he could get signed by Spurs, I was a shoe-in for a football contract.

I'd still pick him over Naughton though. I've peeled potatoes that had a better grasp of the basics of playing football.

I don't think Naughton has done bad to be honest. Ok, he has had some very bad games at left back in the past but I think that's understandable. At right back he is good cover and is understanding of his role in the squad.

I'd like to see him go forwards more often but because he stays back and doesn't spend more time attacking than defending (like Walker and Rose), he is actually pretty dependable in defense. I've never seen him screw up an offside trap, and I've been impressed with him in 1v1s of late. He actually beat and stole the ball from Konoplyanka on more than one occasion against Dnipro (in fairness, he was a beat a couple of times too towards the end, but again, understandable, we saw how Walker fared against him), and he won several tackles today and cut out some passes.

Unfortunately, I think he's treated a bit like Jenas, when things are going bad and no one's really sure why or the fans are just pissed, he becomes a primary scapegoat.

To me his flaw is just that he just seems a bit scared/nervous to go 100% at times and that restricts him. He doesn't ever bring the same intensity that Walker does, and he's never bombing down the touchline. He reminds me of a smaller/faster Corluka. He's got good vision, and his technique/touch is far better than Walker/Rose...he also has more of a footballing brain. The ball he played to Paulinho (who then set up Soldado's missed sitter) was brilliant.

But as said, I think he is a solid squad player who's judged every time on his bad performances at LB, and as a result people tend to overlook the good work he puts in. He'll never become a world beater or anything but he's hardly a calamity (as long as he plays RB).

Naughton bashing is just one of the default settings in here. He's played well in his last three games, and in the last two been our best player in the back four.

Not the right time to start a new thread of this ilk. How about we bash Vertonghen, which we know has a great potential, but has looked like Titus Bramble on acid since about march last season.

No, let's make a new Rose, Dawson or Naughton bashing thread and see those "agree" ratings flow.

I'm struggling to see which is the worse full back out of theses 2, It's like spurs have to have a shit full back for each decade

had a top game tonight!, especially in the 2nd half when he got forward more.
save it for another day... or rip the shit out of someone who did have a bad game

Naughton actually seems to have quite a decent pass on him.
The bloke's a good footballer. As you say, he can spot and execute passes over any distance and is composed in possession. He's not the ideal modern fullback as he isn't great in the opposition half but he is a solid, reliable squad member.

Decent enough right back (or at least decent back up right back), not so good left back.

He's a terrible left back but starting to look like a fairly solid right back now. I'd say he's up there with Corluka on current form, which is really not too shabby at all.

However, I still think Walker will be back in the team when he's fit as his pace gives the opposition something to worry about from a defensive point of view and going by what Naughton has said I don't think he'll be too happy being his understudy for too much longer, which is understandable as he's easily capable of being first choice right back for at least half the premier league teams.

Give the guy a break, young English and happy filling in. Got a better footballing brain than walker and is growing in confidence...

Really enjoyed watching him develop recently. Sadly he'll always be a scapegoat on here, but for a back-up RB he's definitely got a lot going for him.
