I was watching classic games on espn 442. It was showing spurs v arsenal, Jol's first game in charge at spurs.

Naybet was immense, played really well. Though he did make one mistake which lead to a goal for arsenal. But he saved about 5 others.

Would love him back as a coach. I watched him and he made it look so simple, just watched the ball and put his foot on it. I watch our defenders and they seem too concerned with the player.

p.s. I wish we still had Mendes & zeigler

lol, did that game not finish 5-4?

Regarding ramadan, well anelka, mido, toure, nasri are also muslims, its just one month in the year. It really doesn't make THAT much difference.

Van Persie is also muslim isn't he? The Ramadan fast is only 36 days long and they can eat as much as they like during non daylight hours so I agree it doesn't make as much differnce as many people suggest.

They maybe muslims but are they practising muslims? Naybet and kanoute where quite forthright with there beliefs whereas others are not.

Although we lost that game to the scum, I couldn't help come away with a contented smile on my face....it was amazing, the emotional swings all throughout the game, nine different goalscorers, and it was only 1-1 at half time if I remember correctly? An amazing game of football!!

From my experience (and I have known hundereds of Muslims) even the most lax of them take the time to observe Ramadan and Eid.

I'm not saying for sure that the other players fast, but they may well do.

As for the effect the fast may have on their performance, sure top flight sports requires optimal performance and any slight effect can have major implecations.

I would suggest those fasting would have an expert in nutrition who can give them the type of foods that wll provide them with the sort of engery (complex carbs etc) to fuel them through the sunlight hours and minimalise the adverse effects.

So while day to day people observing fasts my seriously be effected (and much of this is subconcious also) they would most likely have not consumed the type of foods that would best serve them for a day of fasting i.e. people generally east foods that will give them a quick spike of energy and leave them feel unstained in the coming hours.

In response to the Ramadan quotes, I remember reading that it is written that people who's job depends on physical fitness or such like can "postpone" ramadan, and observe it in their summer break, and I think this is what either Mido or Kanoute did whilst they were at Spurs, so it's not going to affect all muslims, but I think Naybet did go ahead with it at the normal time and his form did suffer, his age must have played a big part in it as well.

Yes circumstance can make for allowances in fast according to Islamic laws, for example a pregnant girl or one on their period is excused from their fast for the duration of their respective 'conditions'.

Naybet's age could well have been a factor.

I think Naybet scored in that game but defensively he had a nightmare that day. I don't think his performance can be called immense as the scoreline would suggest.

Naybet was one half of the bus parked in front of our goal against Chelsea in 2004.

I met him in St Albans, few years back when he was still playing for us, he was a nice bloke and a good player. I saw him a few times driving in St Albans too, whizzing around in his Ferrari.

Yep

From memory the defending that day was comical from both sides, although I remember our shocking mistakes more.
