we sold crouch for £12million according to wiki

All the numbers are approximate unlrss publicaly announced - I took mine from BBC which has a better reputation for accuracy than Wicki !

But the overall picture is the important message

We had made £12m profit...but Harry (for maybe understandable reasons at the time) then purchaesed him again..but at a high price and lost most of the monety again. Maybe a player who could retain his value would have been a better option ? Unless you have £10m to lose personally you want to lose which you can donate ?

At the time it looked like that Liverpool were going to go into administration and as this meant that Liverpool would have defaulted on their future payments of Keane's transfer i think thst was one of the reasons why we bought him back.

As well as Harry not realising that Keane without Berbatov is like a bacon sarnie without tomato sauce.

I can't remember if we were worried that we wouldn't see the money but Harry didn't seem to put any thought into how we'd line up once Defoe recovered from that broken metatarsal. No thought whatsoever.

Torres was bought the year before. Atletico wasn't worried.

Skrtl was bought the January before. His russian side weren't worried

The next year they spend 38 million on Johnson and Aquilani.

We broke even on Bent.

Actually I think we made a profit on Bent, because on the OS it said we had a transfer of £10mill with clauses rising to £16 million with a sell on %

I think this why sunderland were pissed at him going, and prior to him leaving i remember reading that we got 4 million due to appearance and shit

if i remeber correctly, hudd cost 4mill and lennon cost 1 mill. probably worth 30 mill for the pair right now.

Hudd cost £670k I can say that 100%, my local paper had the documents of the transfer and revealed this, the owners were later jailed iirc

This what i hate about media outlets they just report the fee to their agenda, like bent costing sunderland £10million and highlighting that carsick cost £18 million to make it seem like a waste

Thats all very well, but what did we acheive, pre redknapp?

Thats called the Leeds argument - all the Leeds supporters enjoyed the Champions League league run for a year but not the decade in the Championship/League 1 where they still reside. Most non Leeds fans couldnt understand how Leeds could buy all the players they did on such high transfer fees/wages - but after the Leeds credit card maxed out it was apparant that they should not have done. I want to have a club in the Premiership even if some couldn't care and just want one outrageous season, before going into the lower leagues.

Going back to the facts to answer your question - before Redknapp, the club had been rebuit slowly buying sensibly under Arnessen and coached by Jol who took us to 5th place twice - only missing out on the Champions League due to Lasagnegate. So similar to Redknapp but with a FAR inferior squad which hadn't had £200m spent on it !

Generally Spurs bought players at a low price/good value and when we sold we made a profit - not always, for example we lost money on Postiga, but we also made £20m on Berbatov which was re-invested in the squad to buy more players. However under Commoli/Ramos and then Redknapp most players were bought at much higher prices - and we have lost lots of cash when we sell players so the profits gained pre Ramos/Redknapp have pretty much gone. The reason why we are making losses is that too many of the players are 'proven premiership' players whose value will not increase, and being mid/late 20's at purchase values may have fallen when we come to sell.

The answer is clear - we need to re-establish prudent buying - and in today's climate understand that outside the Manchester duo, Chelsea and Liverpool (so far), there is not much buying power at other clubs so any bad buys by Spurs will be difficult to get rid of without losing our shirt.

The other thing you are likely to see is that the youth policy which was expanded with better quality footballers and investment a few years ago is now starting to deliver a number of quality (albeit young) footballers who will reduce the number of squad players we need to buy. That will allow existing cash to be spent on a smaller number of first team players. It'll take time - if one youth player a year is successful, in 10 years time its 10 players you haven't had to buy in the squad.

you must say Adebayor loan fee could be around £2m - £3m ..

i think current net spend made Redknapp spending more sense, specially after the club paid a lot to stay in his first transfer window.
