I only just read about that a little while ago. I don't know but the Stoke fans were giving him hell-chanting that he looked like a chimp. I was appalled, to be honest.

The chanting at the stoke game was unacceptable. Felt for bale and could see it was getting to him as well. It's just one of those things though, happens at every football ground.

How could you tell that it was getting to him, YiddoJonny?

Just from watching it on tv. Bale is normally quite calm and reserved on the pitch but things weren't quite falling for him in that match and the abuse he was getting was ridiculous. The chants were really loud and the fans were on top of him the whole game. Some players really do deserve what they get but Gareth isn't one of them. Just noticed him get quite angry and frustrated - kicking the ball at the advertising boards etc. anyone else notice this?

I watched the game on tv as well. I'm not surprised to hear he looked upset. As you say, he's very unassuming and doesn't deserve that kind of treatment.

I happen to think some of the stuff coming from the terraces is outrageous, even from our own fans.

I agree, but there are idiots at every club - thankfully only a minority. I always watch my language and what I say at a football match, not because it offends me, just in the respect of others around me.

What's the Modric chant people are banging on about that's meant to be crap?

Preferred the na na na chant to Chrissy Armstrong back in the day, it was deliberately, enjoyably naff and therefore a perfick fit with CA.

Modders deserves a better ditty IMO, the Super Luka suggestion on page 1 is certainly no worse than the current effort

I really don't get why people are getting so upset with the monkey chants at Bale. If he was black I would also be really upset but he's not. There is no racial element to the chants, he just happens to look a bit like a monkey. I don't remember people getting so upset when Martin Keown had "He's got a monkeys head' chanted at him every week. Personally I thought it was funny because he really did.

Bale's gonna have to get used to being targetted by the opposition fans, he's a key player, so anything to throw him off his game will be used.

What Bale has to do is to make sure that doesn't happen, and to shove it up the opposition fans with goals, assists and generally great all-round performances. That'll shut 'em up.

Bale should take it as a roundabout compliment when other teams fans sing rude songs about him. It means he stands out to them as one of our best players and they are at the end of the day just jealous.

What were they actually chanting at Bale though?

Was it just ...He looks like a chimp, he looks like a chiiiiiiimp. Gareth Bale, He looks like a chimp?

because that's hardly that bad.

Agreed, I don't think it crosses the line at all.

In fact, the way that some people complain about 'abuse' from the stands is a bit pathetic.

Is it unacceptable to sing 'who ate all the pies' at players who are slightly tubby?

Is it wrong to call the referee a w****r?

Is it criminal for away fans to taunt HR about his tax charge?

Some people may find it regrettable, but the hostility between the fans (confined to the terrances mind you, and not spilling over into violence) is what gives English football its intensity.

Mocking the other team's players is part of that and as long as it doesn't cross the line into violence, racism or bigotry I see nothing wrong with it.

We need to sort out songs for a lot of our players tbh. Even Danny Rose had his name sung yesterday, and there are players who deserve their own song a lot more than him!
