Sorry, this is a little OT, but..... writing in my post about some of us maybe forgetting how good dawson is, reminded me of a brilliant entry in a guardian text commentary of Spurs v Arsenal. It was the Danny Rose goal game, and loved the minute by minute so much i saved it on my computer! Check this entry out (EDIT: i made it my signature :), so look below):

If Dawson is made Captain does that mean he will be partnering Vert in the middle of defence or does it mean Vert will move to lB to give us a CB pairing of Daws/Vert....?

I know it's from the Star but quotes from AVB saying Dawson is being considered. Obviously he's captain material but I wouldn't have thought he'd be first choice...?

Article:

MICHAEL DAWSON is set to be installed as Tottenham’s captain next season.

New boss Andre Villas-Boas needs a skipper to replace Ledley King, who called time on his playing career last week.

With England midfielder Scott Parker ruled out of the start of the season with an Achilles injury, the path is clear for 28-year-old Dawson to step up.

Villas-Boas, whose side are on their USA tour, said: “There are people who represent Tottenham’s past tradition and high values and that person without a doubt is Dawson.

“But it’s almost more up to the group to decide than the manager. It’s a difficult and sensible decision to make and I’ll be consulting Ledley and Michael on it.

“There’s different types of characters in the dressing room. But it will affect everybody in the dressing room who have to have empathy with the man going to lead them on the pitch.”

Dawson says he wants to succeed King, who had captained Spurs since 2005, on a permanent basis.

He has made almost 250 appearances since joining from Nottingham Forest seven years ago.

He said: “I’ve been captain before when Ledley wasn’t playing. But it’s in the manager’s hands.

“But it is certainly something I’ve enjoyed doing in the past and would love to do again.”

Dawson has overcome the ankle problem that plagued him last season and will partner either Younes Kaboul, Steven Caulker or new boy Jan Vertonghen at the heart of the Spurs defence.

He added: “Ledley had a fantastic career. His retirement was a sad day for everyone and he will be really missed.

“But we move on now. We are all working hard under a new manager preparing for another big season.

“There will always be competition for places which is healthy. We are all chomping at the bit to play.”

Yeah, Daws is certainly 'Club' Captain.. Taken over from Ledley..

I'm not sure of the difference in having a club captain, compared to a normal captain - my theory is they say club captain so the old captain doesn't get upset about not playing all the time.

I would be surprised if Dawson is considered first choice centre-back ahead of Kaboul and Vertonghen. Especially as he doesn't seem to have the pace and mobility to be effective in AVB's defensive high line.

I love Daws and if he was a guaranteed first teamer then it would be an obvious choice as he has been with us a good few years, is vocal with those around him and certainly leads by example with the passion and desire he shows when playing.

The only problem is that I would question whether Daws is even 3rd choice CB at the moment, for my money it has to be:
Verts, Kaboom, Caulker, Daws, Bassong

So on that basis, would rather we went with Rafa or Verts as they are likely to start the majority of games.

Might as well make Jenas captain.

If our first-choice CB pairing isn't Kaboul and Vertonghen I'll chew my own nuts off with a mouthful of vinegar.

Only one candidate for club captain and that is certainly Daws. I think he'll surprise a lot of detractors this season. I'm not convinced he'll be consigned to merely being the 4th choice CB. He's very experienced now and if AVB can fit him with a shock-collar to stop him lumping the ball aimlessly, he's a very tidy footballer, if a little clumsy looking at times.

First team captain? Could be one of half a dozen I suppose. Parker, Kaboul, VDV, Sandro, maybe even Verts if he's quickly earned the respect of the other players or go for a big old grandad keeper option in Brad.

I understand why he's talking about Dawson having the armband but it needs to be a starter really. Kaboul or Verthonghen for me.

I have no idea why we would remotely consider a player who is not good enough for our first team for captain. It's a ridiculous notion. As is a "club captain".

I would think Parker, Kaboul, Vertongen or Sandro would be the only realistic candidates.

Whats more ridiculous is, if it's true and Dawson is made captain and plays regularly it means a lot of good football managers don't know shit OR, it's indeed you, who knows jack.

was at the game last night. We looked a lot calmer when Daws came on in the second half. he is a leader.

Overall what did you make of it all??
overall we looked rusty. Bale was very good, but really everyone just needs to find their touch. Could go into more detail over specific players, but really, this is first preseason game and in a sense they are still on holiday, so i don't see any reason to over analyse. injuries to VDV and walker were disappointing, as really the key point of these games is to get through without injuries! Am glad walker's is being described as slight. he looked in a hell of a lot of pain at the time.

They'll all look sharper against Pool. They must have been blowing hard after the game. First proper run out. Getting their bodies used to it again. Good preparation and obviously excellent pointers on what exactly to focus on in terms of trying to improve the partnerships/combos.
