When was the last time he played a competitive match? Would rather we had someone a little younger to fill the space left by Gomes

But what about friedel's space, its him we need to replace not gomes

I thought he was staying on for another season. Im sure i saw reports that we had offered him a new 1 year deal and he was happy to stay.

So we wont need to replace him this season

We offered him a deal but I don't think he will be playing, originally when he first joined the reason he signed for us was on the basis that he would become a coach part time during his second year. I think the extension is just that him doing that now, i.e. 3rd choice and part time coach.

I cant see Friedel playing a meaningful match at 43 and potentially 44 if we make a final or something. He hasn't looked good enough this season.

Think Jack Butland would be a good cup goalkeeper for a couple of years then would be ready to take over from lloris.

I posted this a few days ago in the ITK thread when it went off topic... AGAIN!:

I'll just say, regarding a backup keeper to Lloris, I really don't see it being beneficial to sign a young back-up keeper, a la Darlow, unless their willing to go out on loan for several seasons.

Let's face it, if we keep Lloris, he's going to want to play as many games as possible, so if we sign a young keeper, his development is just going to plateau or stagnate unless we send him out on loan 'till Lloris moves on or suffers a horrendous injury because there's hardly a GK in the world right now who can compete with Lloris. However, if we sign a young keeper and loan him out for several seasons it could create an unhealthy "Courtois" situation and the GK doesn't have enough time to build a relationship with his new colleagues or club.

This is the main reason why I reckon we offered Friedel a new deal, an experienced keeper who's a a beneficial presence on the training pitch who will be grateful to play for a club like Spurs in their later years who understand and are willing to play back-up to better keepers who are entering their prime.

Edit: Friedel has always been class for us when he's come in goal, sure he's been exposed by the high line but he's done no better than anyone else would who's not used to playing in a high line. His sheer experience has served us so well and his reflexes are still good enough to act as back-up. Any keeper will look shaky after missing most games of a season due to Lloris wanting to play most games and a young keeper isn't going to get more games than Friedel did last season, a young keeper will just die of boredom waiting for Lukaku to knee Lloris in the head again whereas the likes of Friedel will appreciate they aren't testing their body as much as they used to.

If Robinson is a free transfer we should definitely sign him as back up. I would trust him more than Freidel for next season.

Thought Friedel looked great last game he played, surprised me.
If he stay on I'm not to fussed about signing another goal keeper,
if Lloris get injured we'll be given dispensation to loan another one anyway.

I thought I saw Brad the other day when I was out shopping! Then I realised it was just my grandfather.

You realise that Friedel's save-to-shot percentage in 2011-12 was better than Lloris' in both subsequent seasons, and effectively as good in 2012-13? He was also busier in 2011-12 than Lloris was last season. Time's inevitably going to catch up with him sooner or later, but he'll do for one more season.

If Robinson is available on a free and would be ok playing second fiddle to Lloris, I can definitely see the merits in that. Good keeper, knows the club, counts as home grown.

That's a matter of opinion. I would rather not risk time catching up with him before next season starts and us being left with a keeper who has the reactions of stoned sloth as back up.
