It's also worth noting that U-21 players are any born after 1 January 1989.

I've mapped the current squads here showing home grown (in blue) and U-21 (underlined) players: http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AkGaJ1uZSVNadHdCMC1VTV8yNFY2S2Z4aUVpMDZ6U3c&hl=en#gid=3

I can't see any highlighted players. May I suggest that you embed that spreadsheet in post 5 rather than link to it. Also it might be more useful to sort the list by catagory so we get all the CT players at the top, followed by all the AT and so on.

Looks like the shade of blue I've used hasn't translated to Google Docs very well! I'll try to change to a different colour that will show up better.

So what is the consequence of not having 8 home grown players? if you don't have 8 players does it mean that you can't play in the prem or does it just mean that you lose a place in the 25 man squad e.g. if you have seven you can only name 24 as the 25th counts as the 8th home grown player in which case no one needs to name under 21's in the squad anyway.

Also could you have a situation where someone, Arteta for example, qualifies to play for England due to residence duration but can't be one of the 8?

Exactly - you'd just have a squad of 24 players 21 or over. It's actually easier to flip this and think that you're allowed up to 17 non-home grown players born before 1989.

Yep.
