That is insane. Pav already said he was exhasted after one half and he is playing ON HIS OWN. And Daws has a dip in form and is recovering from a stiff hamstring...WTF?? And Corky had an awful game as a right back???

---------------Gomes---------------

Corluka----King----Woddgate----AE

-------Jenas--Zokora--O'Hara-------
Lennon--------------------------Bale

-----------Pavlyuchenko-------------

:duh::duh::duh::duh::duh::duh::duh::duh::duh::duh::duh::duh::duh::duh::duh:

What exactly is wrong with that team?

We've been absolutely crap in midfield this season...overrun in pretty much every game. So why not put 5 in midfield to try and sort that out?

Pav up front on his own may be a little strange but Ramos will have seen him in training (unlike us) so will know whether he's fit enough to do the job. And he looks like he's got a better ability to hold the ball up than Bent so it seems like a logical decision.

Corluka played badly in one game at right back when the whole team was dreadful so don't think we can say that he's crap there.

All in all seems the most sensible choice of team available really.

4-5-1 is definitely the way forward. Jenas is key tonight, he needs to get forward as much as possible with O'Hara and Zokora holding.
I fell confident about our line up. COYS !

If Lennon and Bale can get up top to support Pavlyuchenko this could work, if we have Jenas, Zokora and O'Hara across the middle to cover when they advance.

I'm unhappy with King's involvement again, Woodgate and Corluka did well sunday together, this is just gonna upset the defence yet again, Ledley, please retire now and stop fecking up our defence!

Can't see us scoring too many tonight.

We should be playing 2 upfront, and going at Newcastle, this is just negative tactics and disappointing in my opinion. Id rather we went at them with two upfront than ponce about trying to be solid and invite pressure on.

We have to score more goals than Newcastle, not out defend them.

I think its a really good team actually.

Looks like a very attacking 4-2-3-1

-------------Gomes----------
Corluka--Woodgate--King--BAE
-------Zokora-----O'hara-----
Lennon-------Jenas-------Bale
----------Pavlyuchenko-------

Plenty of width, good defensive cover with two players sitting in front of the back four, lets just hope we can get JJ to support Pav, otherwise he will be very lonely and isolated up front.

I think considering how poor we've been in midfield this season it would be almost stupid to send them out in a 4-4-2. With 3 in the middle we should be a bit more secure which is a good thing to build on. No matter how much we 'go for it' if Newcastle walk through our midfield every time we get the ball we'll get murdered.

Those that have not made the bench, and not for medical reasons, are left out because we are now playing the modern game of squad football.

We are so used to seeing pretty much our best sixteen named as a squad and the left-outs being peripheral forlorn figures battling to get a look-in.

Now we have a strong, lean squad with each member capable of doing a versatile job.

It's a team put out with explicit instructions to face the opposition put in front of it.

Tonight will be an opportunity for a building block for this new squad to begin to cement together.

Absolutely. Pav effectively played as a lone striker for Russia in Euro 2008. Arshavin was drifting off him, but usually behind rather than ahead of Pav.

A lot depends on Jenas in this system. With Zokora and O'Hara (presumably) as the other CMs, JJ can - and must - make forward runs to support Pav. Lennon & Bale can also afford to get forward often too.

[edit just seen SEAN has made exactly the same point ]

And Corky had an awful game as a right back and Lennon is in front of him to further weaken the right side.

When I look at that team I just don't see goals in there. I can't see anyone really gambling and running on trying to get up with Pav.

I just don't see the point in us having possession when its all on the halfway line and when we do have an attack....Lennon skins his man, looks up to put a cross in (if he can manage that) and sees the lonely white shirt of Pav surrounded and looking confused.
