Im just a counter to the overly optimistic bunch that say he plays scintillating football and think he can do no wrong.

The ratings I've posted show that the Scottish Prem is on a par with League one so for me thats the level he has managed at.

Ive said it before that I’ll support him if he comes in but it’s still wild how we can push on so much then seemingly regress within the space of 6 months.

If this doesn’t work out then Levy really needs to go and ive been someone that supported him for a long time.
Not sure anyone has said this....

I certainly agree that Levy should be gone now but definitely if this appointment fails but that is for another thread.

I've got a horrible feeling that IF he gets the gig, the cockjousting will carry on through multiple threads right up until and for a while after he gets the spanish archer.

Can we all just stop with the Sir Alex Ferguson comparisons please?

It holds zero relevance to football in this era of football.

Just saw this Celtic fan comment from another forum linked to by Windy, and worth a read...

Hello Spurs fans
I’m a Celtic fan and I’ve read this thread, mainly to see if any of you were ITK about Ange but a few comments need to be addressed.

A lot of you seem to be referencing Gerrard as a measure of success in Scotland. Gerrard won a single title and no cups in three seasons. It was 1 trophy out of 9 he competed for. He wasn’t a success, he was hyped up by his friends in the media because he’s Steven Gerrard. Ange won more than him in ten months. He’s currently on 4 trophies out of 5 with a cup final this weekend to make it 5 out of 6.

“Rangers have a bloke in charge that must have won a competition or something” is another comment that has stood out. After Gerrard left, Rangers appointed GVB who had won the league at Feyenoord… Isn’t that the same pedigree as the guy Slot you all wanted last week? He then took Rangers to a Europa league final 11 months ago.
This season we’ve won the league against a Rangers team that had over 90 points. A total that would have won the title 9 times out of 10. We did it by scoring a record number of goals. We beat them in a semi final and a cup final. As I said, they were in a Europa final… not a bad team you know, beating Dortmund, RB etc.

Rodger’s was a good manager who was up against incredibly poor competition. A Rangers side that had just returned to the league and had people like Mark Warburton I charge and Scottish players with no pedigree. His trebles do not compare to the one Ange is on the verge of winning and frankly his football was extremely boring for the most part and he had the personality and charisma of a dish cloth.

When Ange joined us we were also underwhelmed, our forums had splits down the middle too and we started the season really poorly going out of the CL to some Danish team and losing quite a few of our opening games but when it clicked, it clicked and I’ve watched some of the most exciting, dynamic and expansive football I’ve ever seen us play. The guy has a good ethos on how the game should be played which is quick, front foot, attacking football. It’s all about winning and winning playing the football he likes. He has no time for defensive, turgid approaches to games. We went into a game against Real Madrid with one pivot in the 6, two 8s, two wingers and inverted full backs. He has no fear and we love that. We play single pivot against everyone and we press really high up the pitch, 100 miles from the off with a lot of great rotations on each wing. We take quick free kicks, corners and throw ins. You can find a lot good examples of that play from these games:

I can understand your reservations although some of it does come across as slightly entitled but you’re a club that seems a bit lost, there’s no connection between fans, manager and players. You’ve had a lot of big time hires that haven’t worked out. This guy is probably exactly what you should be looking for. He really unites the team and the fans together, he’s a passionate guy with incredible presence. Our players will run through walls for him but they are also shit scared of him. He has no time for egomaniacs or primadonnas. He’ll weed them out fast.
Lastly, this man is a mentality monster. You are criticising his lack of pedigree. Wake up, do you know how difficult it is for a guy who’s managing in Australia to get noticed? There’s a bias towards managers from Europe or in Europe. The Morocco manager referenced it during the World Cup.
Ange has had no help, no leg up ala Gerrard, Lampard etc. He started off with Australia U17s and now he could become the first Australian to manage in the EPL. He rocked up at Celtic with not one member of staff. He backs himself like you wouldn’t believe and people follow this guy, he gets everyone on board. As for Levy, Ange is in charge of everything at Celtic. He does all the signings, he rejigged all the youth set up so now they all play the same tactics as the first team. He oversees the full project. We don’t have a DOF.

Absolutely desperate for him to stay at Celtic but I know the nature of the beast. We worship him like a God. I’ve never known a manager to be so in sync with the fans. We know Ange though and he’ll be very keen on being the first Aussie to manage in the EPL given everything he’s had to overcome to get here.

Great find and great post by the op. I love the bit about GVB aswell for context.

I totally agree with the Aussie route being extremely hard as well. Look at Lampard as the opposite. Walked into Derby, Chelsea and Everton with zero pedigree and a record of failure.

I personally think he looks pretty similar to redknapp in his player relationship style but without the chip on his shoulder. I think he'll be a good switch from Conte and if nothing else we'll be gungho and exciting 5o watch for a bit.

Gutted about slot after months of not wanting. Will never stop crying for Poch but I can get behind this guy and don't care if it's Scotland or no prem.

I don’t get why we’ve set up the data recruitment route and then going for a guy who wants to do the recruitment himself. It makes no sense unless he’s going to buy into that.

I agree with you though. I find it a disappointing appointment.

I find it hard to believe we’ll allow him to do the recruitment himself.

As you say it makes no sense with us recently ploughing more resources into a data-led recruitment approach. And especially as AP has never managed at our level before.

Silva absolutely is another pragmatic, defensive Portuguese coach.

He would be one of the worst possible picks.

For context with Silva and why I’d be so depressed.

Not only is he another defensive and reactive coach (completely against what we want to see!), his performance at Fulham has actually papered over massive cracks.

They were 14th for xG and bottom for xGA this season. Essentially they were very lucky and in most seasons would have been in the relegation dogfight. Those stats aren’t sustainable.

If we are truly moving towards using data analytics, we wouldn’t touch him with a barge pole.
I really don't think Silva is pragmatic and defensive mate and I've heard really good things from people at Fulham about him, club might see this as another Poch type appointment a Manager overachieving with a PL side.

Fulham have been one of my favourite teams to watch this season.

This all being said and I've tried to not be negative to this point, as much as I rate Silva more than others probably do, I would be disappointed if its him and would much rather Big Ange or L.Enrique given JN and Slot are seemingly off the table.

Reading between the lines seems like he's interested, but I prefer what he's saying there compared to what Poch was saying before the CL final...
How come I can never see these lines we need to read between like others do?

As much as there are obvious reservations. I can't help but like the bloke and how he comes across. Sensible and focussed with that wry Aussie humour. I can get on board with that. If you couple in the style of footy and as previously pointed out, he's shown some tactical awareness according to the team he has. (Can't remember who posted it). Then it might just work.

The key would be getting the players, for once, to buy into it. Promotion of academy.

My only concern is the CB position, but that would be the case for any coach incoming.

He strikes me as the type who won't suffer fools so that works too.

But, he's not signed yet. Could still fail to materialise.

Have you considered it could also be because Celtic are no where near the level of their European opposition...

They gave Real Madrid a real game for 45 mins then ran out of steam.

Celtic haven't done well in Europe for years.

of course. And what of their performance in europa and conference

Fans will unite behind anyone that's winning. You only need to look at Arteta to see that. You certainly have more chance of winning at Celtic than you do at Spurs.
Winning, AND/OR building an exciting project.

Yes Arsenal fans wanted Arteta out at the start of the season before the one just gone but once they got past their poor start the fans got behind the team, sure they were gutted when they threw away 4th to us but many Arsenal fans I spoke to actually were willing to keep giving him time because they saw shoots of encouragement in the style of play and what Arteta was building with exciting young players and style of play.

'Winning' or getting lots of 'wins' is important but we were 3/4th under Conte and a lot of our fans weren't happy because of the way we were playing and the lack of buy-in from Conte and the uncertainty longer-term, same with Jose, we were top but people knew it wouldn't last and once we reverted to dropping to the edge of our box most games fans didn't like it.

I guess another positive/silver lining for no European competition is there’s going to be a ton of work that needs done from a fitness perspective and approach to get our players to where they need to be to implement Ange’s tactics. They couldn’t be further from what we have been doing for 3+ years.

So more time on the pitch to change that mentality, build up that stamina to be relentless in attack like he wants and obvious to embed those tactics makes for good timing, I guess.

This would be the case for any new hire, but for a guy who people are already doubting, he should have ample time to get his tactics and ethos across early.

The manager selection is important, but what’s most important is whether the new manager is backed by the board. If the board does not back him, then it doesn’t matter who the manager is.

He's performances in Europe are rubbish and that's the real marker for me.

Well can't be Conte level bad? Managing Juvetus, Chelsea, Inter and Spurs without winning a single CL knockout game for a decade. Mind you, he had to draw Celtic while managing Juve to get that win. Did you hold that against appointing Conte?
