I find the links between Conte and Zaniolo interesting as Conte sold him to Roma in one of his final acts at Inter - does he really love him or is there a bit of story telling in that narrative?

Except that Zaniolo was sold Jul 1, 2018 and Conte took over at Inter 31 May 2019. Otherwise you might be correct.

Takeovers takes months and years unless this has been going for that long don’t expect it right now

I was talking about our transfer window not any takeover or investment. No idea on that, just talking about how we historically operate in winter transfer windows. .

As @Hakkz points out your dates are all wrong. It was such a massive blunder of a deal Inter made. They bought Nainggolan for €40 (if I remember correctly but I could be wrong) and included Zaniolo in the deal. Monumentally bad deal.

Conte actually wanted Inter to bring Zaniolo back in the 2020 summer window.

Also, what I forgot about, Inter have a 15% sell on clause with Zaniolo. So that is another reason Roma might be a little bit more difficult on the fee.

If we had any other coach I dont think I would want this guy.
But Conte wants him and does seem the type of player who’d do well under Conte.
I would be concerned how he would go if Conte left in the near future tho.

Loan + obligation then most likely.

Guess Roma might be more open to high loan fee with a lower obligation to buy fee to circumnavigate this. Italian clubs usually seem more willing to do these kind of deals.

I can see how he fits and would be a good addition but I can't help but feel that conceding 2 goals every week would make me priortise central defence. Seeing as we're aiming for Porro, I'm assuming we aren't switching to 4-2-3-1 to try and win the midfield battle anytime soon instead. I don't know, I'd be happy with Zaniolo and can see how he helps with possible 3-5-2 or rotating with Kulusevki but it's so clear to me that our defence is the problem and a RWB and AM are not going to be enough to rectify the situation, I feel it unrealistic to expect 3 signings so I'd vastly prefer some quality in defence as our priority.

I guess if we actually apply some pressure going forward it would relive the constant pressure the defence are under, especially in the first half of games

I completely agree with you. My assumption is, our top two CD targets Gvardiol and Bastoni aren’t available at a suitable price until summer. I guess the one possibility is Hincape but i think he’s far too raw to actually improve our defence atm and could actually do more harm then good for both us and his development.

I agree to an extent but with both Zaniolo's and Porro's pace, athleticism and technical ability I would expect us to be able to keep the ball better, press more effectively, and ultimately cause the opposition more problems. This would mean less pressure on a porous defence.

Besides are defence was pretty good last season. If we get on a run they might pick up some confidence and hit form for the second half of the season.

Yes I think most of us agree with you but I do think Porro and Zaniolo would massively help our squad. Looking at their profiles and statistics both advance the ball through dribbling and can actually release pressure off of our defense. I think both work hard and would massively help us on any counter attacks as well.

If we can get Zaniolo under certain circumstances to Deki than I think we'd say we have done well there

That's not to say if Skriniar or Gvardiol opportunity come they shouldn't take it, but if none of our CB targets are available than I also don't think we should get anyone for the sake of anyone.

Loan to buy option? Music to my ears.
Money spent on Porro with loan to buy for Zaniolo would be a very Spurs way of handling the window.

Under Paratici we've liked to push the payment of one big transfer down the line to allow for more spent on others in the immediate - Romero and Kulu namely.

If Roma are willing to do that then I think this deal is much more likely. 35m is also our kind of fee.

I can’t see Roma agreeing to a loan to buy. Didn’t we try that in the summer!? Why would they accept that now that he has 18mths left on his contract?

They will need the money to replace a first team player, after all..

Can only see Roma agreeing to a loan if it's an obligation rather than option.
