Southampton have opted to cancel future payments owed by Tottenham for Gareth Bale in an attempt to ease their current financial difficulties.
In a bid to raise immediate funds, the Saints have forfeited part of the additional £5million based on appearances that they were owed for Bale, in exchange for an earlier settlement.
Southampton received an initial £5m for Bale when his transfer to White Hart Lane was agreed last summer and that fee was set to double when the Wales full-back made a set number of appearances.
However, Southampton's plc chairman Rupert Lowe has accepted an earlier settlement as part of the deal which brought young goalkeeper Tommy Forecast to St Mary's on Monday.
Lowe told the club's official website: "I am always reluctant to forego any future income but given our current financial situation, we must do all we can to go into the new season as robustly as possible."
Southampton were forced to agree a similar deal last season with Arsenal for Theo Walcott, sacrificing a reported £2.9m in order to collect the cash sooner.

so we only paid 5 mil for bale, score!!!!!

Not quite. They are so hard up, instead of waiting for us to pay the £5 million in the coming years, they've obviously contacted us and offered us a deal in which we pay a much smaller lump sum now.

Wicked. Even if we ended up paying 7m for him I think in the long run it's a bargain.

Let's just hope his injury days are behind him!

Also, let's hope Barcelona go bankrupt so we only end up paying the initial 5m for Dos Santos too

I agree,i thought £10m was cheap in the first place let alone getting him for half price.
After what i saw of him last season,im positive he we carry on the same way and keep getting better.
He has the potential to be one of the best left back in europe,if not the world.
He is a quality player and a great young lad.
Good luck to the boy for the upcoming season.

How can you say, by any stretch of the imagination, that when we signed him for an agreed total price of £10m as barely a seventeen year old as "cheap"?????

He could've snapped a leg in the first six months, never played again - that's not cheap! He could've decided that, once this initial contract runs out, he wants to leave the game altogether. He could be another Lennon, being a prodigy amongst his age group as a youngster, but not carrying that talent into maturity...

£10m of anyones money is a gamble when there's no way to tell what will happen between his 18th birthday and him reaching the peak of his career.

The deal in itself was really well put together - Southampton's situation has, unfortunately for them, meant they can't sit tight on that future windfall, they need it now, they made the proposal - all is good.

It is just one more example though of why no-one should touch that Southampton job with a really, really long stick. The chairman and board are obviously there to make sure they just keep their heads above water without actually achieving, otherwise expectations rise again and fans demand more, which means spending more... not gonna happen there for a while yet.

Why does his age matter? Modric could get injured in his first game and be forced to retire. £10m for a kid who is potentially as good as Bale is a bargain of humongous proportions. If he stays for 13 years the saving would be massive.

Agreed.
Just look at Dennis Irwin at Man U.
o.k,they never paid big money for him,but he was bought at a young age and played there for the rest of his career.

Players who stay at one club for 13 years are few and far between. Hardly something to base an argument on! :)

I think we can say that he looked a good buy at 10 in retrospect of that incredible start. You're right that anything can happen. But he was the shit before his injury.

Yes 10 can't be cheap for a 17 year old. But I think the point that was trying to be made was that we had begun to feel that 10 was a bargain price for the kid (hoping that injuries aren't a problem) and we were grateful for it. But at a fraction of that is a real steal.

I just hope in a few years that Man U don't come knocking and we end up in the same boat as we did with Carrick.

He also said of the Hoddle/Spurs saga:

"There are always people looking to plant a Klingon blast on the Starship Enterprise,"

"We've got our force shields up, but the Klingons are shooting at us. Every time they land a punch they are sapping our powers.

"Now we need to adopt the Invisible Shield until we have got the right man in place."

I want some of what he's smoking :duh:
