Not linked with suitable strikers

Im a little concerned that we are linked with strikers who are unlikely to play up front by themselves.

Im not sure Suarez or Rossi is the answer. Remember how Defoe and Keane couldnt play together, I think it could be similar with VDV and these 2.

We should look for someone with more physical presence and score goals. Someone like Carroll but cheaper.

I should have included can shoot too.

you're forgetting that Crouch is quite large, therefore there is a higher chance of the ball bouncing off him in a helpful direction when he isn't looking which is an attribute money simply can't buy you in today's market.

Sack Levy and Redknapp and bring in Andyw362. This guy clearly knows what hes on about and knows what the future formation/plans for the team are.

But Suarez played up front pretty much on his own at the world cup, Forlan was much deeper (certainly no further forward than VDV plays for us). And he was excellent.

(What exactly is the difference between a 4-4-2 with one striker dropping deep, and a 4-5-1 with an attacking midfielder pushing forward to support the striker?)

I think you're probably right, but we haven't signed anyone yet.

In an ideal world, we would of sold Crouch and bought Dzeko - Thats the sort of player we need with Crouch finding the exit door.

In an ideal world....

I still think a big striker should be an option. In which case I like Crouch on the bench. We can play great football now, and we proved it with 10 men even. So while a big centre forward could be ideal, I think it's more important that he is capable of playing in a free flowing team. You dont have to be big to be strong either. Someone with speed, strength, intelligence and end product are the main things imo.

I would maybe look to replace Crouch in the future, but I dont consider him a first teamer anyway. What we really need imo is to upgrade on Defoe as our top striker. I think Defoe really needs that competition up front to get the best out of him. Havethose 2 vying for the lead striker role, with Crouch/Pav as 3rd choice.

If we are wanting to play the ball on the ground, which I think most of us do, we dont necessarily need a tall target man. We need an intelligent, strong, fast striker, yes its good to have the option for a long ball if needed but I dont think we should limit our search.

Our current style, we need a strong tall striker who can knock them down for vdv and knock a few in from crosses. If we can't bring anyone in permanently this window, I wonder if we can bring someone like carew in on loan or a short term contract. With bent moving there, he is now behind bent, heskey and agbonlahor. He is also out of contract in the summer.

I'm waiting with baited breath for the Andyw thread on our new stadium because we really lack for threads on that topic and you can never have too much of Andyw's genius at starting new threads

You don't have to be tall to be good in the air. Cahill proves that time and again.

Oh and Carew would be a horrible signing even on loan.

Cahill ghost in from the hole between the strikers and midfield and often gets to the end of crosses, knock downs unmarked to score, abit like our vdv. If you are the main striker, you won't be allowed a second of freedom. Crouch can't handle the attention.

It's meant to be a stop gap last day measure if we can't get anyone in. He is not that bad, if carew is horrible, what does that make crouch? He is almost unbearable to watch

We dont need a striker to knock balls down to VDV, we already have that option with Crouch.

What we need is to play to our strengths and that is to continue playing technical football and someone who can attack crosses. It doesn't have to be headers all the time either, just someone who has good movement in the box and attacks the ball. Most of Lennon and Bales crosses are medium to low, and cut backs. They both love to drive to the byline and get balls into the box.

Neither of our strikers make good enough runs in the box and attack the ball with everything. They don't really have that predator instincts to attack balls into them. We need someone intelligent enough to make good moves inside the box, and to stay onside. Someone quick mentally aswell as physically. Strong enough to outmuscle defenders. With the work rate to match.
