Onward and Upward

As I've said in replies to a couple of other threads..

1. So we don't have CL.
2. Modders is off - we will miss him, but we can try to get people like Sandro to step up. Yes he is not as good as Modders, but he is an excellent stopgap I personally think.
3. Bale is probably off - we will miss him a fair bit, but probably not as much as people think.
4. So we basically need to get a new centreback.
5. We would then need a new left winger.
6. We need a new striker. I personally don't rate any of our strikers and Adebayor is not enough for me. He has his strengths, such as positioning, but lacks a lot elsewhere.

I personally think, as we are lacking CL, we need to look at places like the Bundesliga to get out some rough diamonds (another Berbatov or Real Madrid style raid on players from that league anyone?) I am strongly of the opinion that are are many rough diamonds to be had from leagues like the German one.
After that, it is onward and upward, not for the title, we can't compete with the billionaires, end of story unless we got really jammy, but 3rd or 4th is the aim next year.
Do I trust Spurs to share my opinions and not only that, to execute them to my personal liking? Of course not, but these are my hopes and if we can at least make a start on it, then we will have a good Summer and be raring to go in the league.

I'm a fucking tool for calling Sandro a stopgap? Why exactly? I don't really know whether you thought I am calling Sandro shit and not worthy of replacing Modders, or if you think Sandro isn't worthy of being as good as Modders... either way, he needs mroe regular games with us to tell.... but it looks positive and he may get better yet hopefully.

Sorry, but the argument is we have no good strikers, are losing our two best creative players, our inspirational centre back captain is finished, and we have a goalkeeper who is geting closer to his pension than his prime...?

Yea, but you can put any tone on it you like, we can at least salvage the squad in general with 3 or 4 signings and aim for 3rd. It doesn't sound as bad when I put it that way!

Friedel will survive another season in goal so we can wait until next Summer to replace him.

Our Luck this season:
1. Speculation of Modric leaving during the first two games of the season.
2. Redknapp heart operation
3. Speculation about Redknapp + the England job
4. Chelsea somehow beat Barcelona in the semi final to ensure we need to finish 3rd
5. Fulop giving one of the worst goalkeeping displays ever seen to ensure that we don't
6. Chelsea then beating a German team on penalties after Bayern missing one in extra time.

I'm also in the camp that we only have ourselves to blame for missing out - but come on, that is really unlucky.

We managed to finish in the top four last season and we can do it again next season. Without the champions league distractions we can focus on the league again next season but hopefully this time we won't make the same mistakes. There'll be big clubs sniffing around Modric and Bale but they both have nice long contracts and Levy will get us a great deal if needs must.

Lets hope we can come up with some new ideas this transfer window and build up a buzz around the club again.

good man watson, we haven't collapsed from a CL club to relegation fodder (yet!), we have been knocked back a step (maybe a step and a half) but have the power to hold fort and push up again is the main point.

Increase the squad size and start again, lets go out and win the europa league, dont understand the english teams downer on the competition. Yeh we all want champs league footy but if your in europa league go out and win it......

I don't think that levy will allow modric and bale to leave.They are partly responsible for us not coming third, so they should stay.

To be fair I think Modric was off anyway, I think we'll keep Bale for one more year, and we were never going to be able to keep hold of Ade.

I therefore think that we need to sign a new 'Keeper, a new Centre Back, get Naughton back on loan, a Winger, and 2 new Strikers.

Then we can start with:

Modric gone is a loss. I think a massive loss. However, I can't see us signing anyone to replace him as who do you sign - I know someone said Cabaye but I don't think this is viable. hopefully Huddle can come back and get his game going to help us retain possession.​

Winger - help us mix it up. Alternateively, Pienaar comes back but I hate him this morning for congratulating Chelsea (as I do Saha) and think he's been engineering a move back to Goodison via Twitter.​

So, all in all I'm gutted and there's work to be done but I still retain some optimism.​
