Opinion of AVB in hindsight?

My opinion hasn't changed. I am still very attracted to him. He has a bad case of cock-throat though, so probably wouldn't take him back to my parents.

I think that as soon as he was labelled anti-football, it was a tag that would follow him everywhere. A bit like Bale being a diver. He didn't dive often, but once labelled as such, it was open season on him as the refs just wouldn't blow.

Not saying you're wrong, and mud does stick, but AVB doesn't help himself by playing boring arse anti footbal.
It makes the jobs of the proponents of this particular "myth" that much easie.

At the time I was more than happy that Levy appointed him but his managerial decisions left me scratching my head coupled with the piss poor boring football we used to play under him and the fact that I had no confidence in him to actually bring through any youngsters, if his system relies on players like Hulk, David Villa and Moutinho then he wasn't the right man for the job and he was at the wrong club which proved to be the case.

I really, really want AVB to take over at WHU.:D
I would be very interested to see him take over at West Ham too

A great opportunity for him to prove his capabilities in our league

He wouldn't have the resources to compete for the league or have the best players at his disposal but in West Ham there is a club with quite a large range of potentials (could just as easily challenge for Europe as fight relegation)

If he were able to take a team like West Ham and compete against the big teams in our league better than Big Sam has been able to with them I'd say he'd earned his respect and proved he's growing and improving as a manager capable of building strong teams that perform beyond the sum of their parts or if he really does need to be in charge of the biggest team with best players to be a success

If he fucked up and got them relegated - well we could all laugh at West Ham playing Championship football in their new Olympic stadium (win win)

I don't think he would get them relegated. But for sure he would not get them playing entertaining football. I would get a kick out of all the WHU fans moaning and reporters repeatedly asking him questions about Spurs and him trying to contain his anger.
I like to be entertained.

For a point this year Big Sam had them playing pretty well, they were strong and well organised and they actually played some decent football

At one point they were a match for most teams - they outplayed us twice this season

I think he'd be inheriting a reasonable squad of players so it would be a very fair assessment of his skills - if he failed to improve them beyond what Big Sam could do it would be his third failure in England and enough to suggest he was over hyped and really needs to be the big fish in a small pond but if he were able to make them well organised and productive and get them performing to a level that say Koeman has taken Southampton to this year I'd say he'd deserve credit where its due

Pity it's in Here in the City. I'm more likely to get a blow job off the Pope than one of their scoops has of being correct.

Only thing I miss from his reign is Freund on the sideline.

As far as I am concerned he was a very limited manager. We've all come across them at some point in our lives I am sure. Been on all the courses. Smart academically but not a natural in what they are trying to do. As soon as something goes wrong that doesn't have a textbook solution they flounder. That's AVB for me. Makes me laugh when people tried to claim he was progressive.

There are very few Managers who over a short term can influence how good a team is. The performance tends to come from the players. A great Manager with poor players won't win anything. Great players with a poor Manager can still win things. AVB inherited a cracking team and as far as I am concerned dismantled it, dismantled the style and system to implement his own and we've been floundering ever since.

The really frustrating thing is that we've missed such a great opportunity the last two or three seasons because many teams are in a similar boat. The league is the weakest it's been for years and we aren't in a position to take advantage of that. The only good thing is despite playing more like Spurs circa the late 90's we can still get top six or seven quite comfortably due to how poor the league is. But it should be top four.

That said it was a joke he was fired when he was. He should have been given at least a season. 6th place for us is par and as long as we're in with a shout of 6th place then the Manager should retain his job. Simple as that.

But I wasn't sad to see him go as his style of football was mind numbingly boring. High line, high pressing, high tempo, offside trap? Go 1-0 up and then stifle the opposition with numbers in midfield, killing the tempo and by passing the ball backwards over and over again? All been done before. George Graham. Arsenal, early 90's.

I do think AVB will go on to have a fairly decent career in lesser leagues. He has the reputation to ensure he'll get a crack at the big jobs in the smaller leagues. I personally think that for the big leagues he will flounder unless he is fortunate enough to get a crack at an already title winning assembled side.

im sure there was a point where freund was not on the sideline...didnt they fall out or something happen? 2nd season i dont think he was there at all

The rumour in the press at the time was that AVB took offence at Freund's celebrations upstaging his own.

The coolest mutha we've ever had in charge at THFC; I'd have him back in a heartbeat...even if only to preside over team pics like this:

A footballing dinosaur, nice guy, but thank god he is gone

His style of play needs filing away with George Graham and Howard Wilkinson, never to be seen again
