Our pathetic short corners!!!

Anyone else scream for us just to get the ball in the box when we get a corner or free kick?? So many times we take it short, and end up not even getting the ball in the box. It's forced backwards and before you know it our corner is being passed back to our centre backs on the half way line.

Just seems so basic. Obviously it must be part of the coaching but it leaves me so frustrated. Think there was a stat yesterday that we've scored the fewest headers in the league. Wonder why. Just get the ball in the box!

I was quite pleased to see us taking short corners actually. More chance of them leading to something than just hitting them into the first man 99.9% of the time like we usually do.

Why don't we take inswinging corners at all? They are so much more dangerous than the ones that we attempt that 99 times out of 100 don't even beat the first man.

To be honest I've come to hope we just take short corners and free kicks these days, that way we get the ball back into general play without kicking it aimlessly with no hope of success so that the opposition can restart play with a goal kick, that's how poor we are at set pieces.

Our 'long' corners are usually so bad that they dont even clear the first man, so it wouldnt make much difference.

Barcelona use short corners to retain possession and build an attack into the box.

I would much rather we attempted this than not clearing the first man and leaving ourselves vunerable for a counter attack. Trouble is we panic, pass it it short then looking for someone on edge of the box quickly.

If only we could find a player with good corner taking ability, we should be scouting for someone who is good at set pieces because our team is incredibly poor with them.

It makes sense against teams like City and Stoke who will overpower us in the air. As mentioned, Barca use the short corner routine for similar reasons. They have a lot of short technical players to play it out.

What made me laugh was that we attempted what was clearly a training ground routine where Luke and Rafa play it short, and then play it to Bale to strike across the ball outside the box.

The routine failed twice, yet the Bale strike actually worked in free play instead and got him the goal. He has obviously been working on that strike this past week.

With all the technical quality we have I think we can be more creative with these short corners. It's not the idea I dsilike about them but the execution.

Our set plays are quite possibly the worst in the league. Now I don't watch Arsenal but I can only imagine them being worse.

Every single damn time we get a corner or free kick I always say here we go again...and our lads never disappoint! It is terrible!!

Sure we have a lot of smaller players but we have Adebayor, Bale, Kaboul, Walker has a leap. Good corners are mostly about the delivery anyway...and ours is awful! Top drawer players like Modric, Van der Vaart and Bale can't take a bloody corner! And when Lennon waddles over...I think what the f**k

I am convinced we don't even bother practicing them, or its not something the coaching team are overly fussed with.

Every couple of weeks I rant about this! Look at any successful side in this league and they were good at set plays - Chelsea with Drogba and Terry; Man U with Bruce, Pallister, Vidic, Ronaldo; Blackburn had Shearer, Colin Hendry, Mike Newell; even Arsenal had Tony Adams, Vieria, Campbellend.

I even remember one day in the south stand complaining and the bloke next to me saying "nahhhh we are gonna score this one bruv! I got a feeling!" only for it to hit the wall.

There is no excuse for VDV or Bale not to be able to whip an inswinger at pace and dipping into the six yard box.

Going by some ITK, any set piece training would be a start!

I actually think we had a plan for the City game. They massively outnumbered us in terms of tall players, but they didnt man mark, so when we played it short Bale took a few steps back and was unmarked. I think we did put one corner into the box, Modric outswinger, it got cleared.

Our set pieces are shameful but I'm in favour of the short corner in terms of keeping possession.
