Yup, most of our recent managers/coaches have made bad calls on who they want, bad because either at the time (eg HR - Joe Cole) or after signing (AVB - Paulhino) or as you say we didn't sign good players (Francis - Bergkamp , Zidane), (HR - Suarez) and i'm sure there are other good examples.

Not sure we can stop that, but I do wonder if we mitigate against it either by saying that all of the manager/DoF/Levy/Uncle Tom Cobbley must agree all purchases (ie remove the rogue manager factor) or the manager has final say on half the purchases and DoF on the other half. Its widely said that Eriksen (and a couple of others) were not an AVB choice but was purchased on the 'Committee's' recomendation whereas most of AVB's choices (eg Paulhino, Soldado) have been poor purchases in not delivering as expected, so maybe we are operating the second way (e manager chooses half, the committee half) but the introduction of Mitchell should at least give a veneer of statistical certainty as to whether a purchased player will deliver or not.

Indeed, it's one of the reasons I've always been in favour of the DOF or committee system. It doesn't guarantee a hit with every roll of the dice but at least you're not hocking big fees and 4/5 years of big salaries on one man's whim who probably won't be here as long as the player's he's made us buy.

The flip side is everyone needs to make allowances and be realistic about that approach, including us fans.

That system is pretty normal throughout Europe. And not complex. Head coach says what he feels the team needs, they all (HC, Dof, head scouts, chairman) discuss the options and what their football and financial viability is and work out a list.

Hmmm. Definitely stinks of a Levy flavour of the month special

No big deal, like he said recently Pochettino knows the difference between a head coach and manager.
