The issue is that when Paulinho is poor, he's unimaginably shit, barely able to get a touch or do anything worthwhile. He drifts through games and despite playing in center midfield, being, in theory, an "all action box-to-box player," he manages to be anonymous both defensively and offensively. I genuinely believe that at his worst he is our worst senior midfielder. Thus, people have clouded views of him. He was basically average in 60% of the games last season, but I can't remember the last time (aside from Stoke) I thought that he had a very good match. So in CM he's essentially at best average and at worst dire and ineffectual.

Behind the striker, in an attacking position, he seemed to express himself more than usual and I felt he was gaining confidence before the injury vs. Stoke. Since then he's been a shell of his former (Corinthians, Confed Cup, Stoke) self.

All that being said.. I don't think he's that good, just not THAT poor. I'd sell him if we could but I really don't think we'll get the fee required.

He is a bit too lanquid for me and doesn't work particularly hard.

Even though I feel his form dropped around the transfer window time over all I think he showed enough qualities to keep.

His tackling and passing stats are impressive. I'm not a massive fan of stats either but they are very good it's hard not to take notice. Your looking at around 88% in the tackling department and 85% in the passing.

Must keep IMO.

No, he wasn't. He played 2 games and, although showed some promise, he was far from "brilliant"

He was excellent for about five years at Toulouse, must count for something even though he no doubt will still need a bit of adjusting to the PL as he didn't play that many games last season

Anyone know when he'll be back in training?

Brazil played their last world cup game against the Netherlands so I thought that players from both sides would return to training on the same day. I've seen photos of Vorm in training but nothing of Paulinho.

Meh. I don't mind if he misses the start of the season. He needs more of a rest than any of our other players.

*cue hilariously unfunny jokes about him being lazy etc.*

Well Wenger has stated that players who participated in the World Cup are obliged to have a 4-week break after the exit of their team. Looks like he'll miss the beginning of the season.

Most if not all of the other WC participants are back I thinkg so Jenas should also be back real soon.

Personally not that interested in what AW thinks!
