Wow, that looks like great business when you put it like that. Still working it nicely in the post-Comolli era, who in my opinion was overrated.

Made himself available a lot against Milan and wanted the ball. Rarely gave it away and played it simple. I liked how he gave 110% chasing lost causes too.

At 2m it's a inexpensive gamble, the only downside is making all the midfielders happy

Thoughts?

Seems a class act to me, reminds me very much of Hleb (Arsenal era) but with added grit and determination.

Don't think he'll score that many but he's a fantastic addition to the squad and another astute bit of business in a season when we brought in Van Der Vaart, Sandro, Gallas and Pienaar for a grand total of £16.5m!

I dont expect him to score. I do expect that he and his work with the strikers will eventually start to bare fruit as he looks like the man that can provide that killer pass - his backpass to Defoe in the home game against Bolton and his slick ball to Crouch against Milan in the first half are prime examples of what this man can do near or in the box. Too bad Defoe missed, who I bet was "Oh shit!!! I didnt expect that ball at all", and Crouch ran towards the off-side. I was so pissed at Crouch. Aren't strikers supposed to try to stay in on-side position all the time? Why would he make few steps away to gets his ass in an off-side position when he could have done the same in the opposite direction? We could have buried Milan alive before halftime if we had Defoe or Pav, who are much better than Croach when we play the ball on the ground, instead we finished almost every neat passing move with a cross to Croach.

Back on Pienaar - he is the shit.

steady player, good enough to round out the squad but would he be in your 1st 11 if we got to Wembley? Not in mine.

But that is the whole point, the first 11 should change according to the circumstances of the match. Niko is a vastly superior player to Pienaar, would he have been better on Tuesday? I don't think so.

We shouldn't have to play our best 11 players in every game.

Pienaar is a very, very good player who is ideal in away games when you need to compete and use the ball intelligently.

I disagree strongly with the bolded bit. No chance is Niko a vastly superior player. An urgument could be made that he is slightly the better player but vastly? Ridiculous notion.

Other than that I agree with the majority of your post. Pienaar will be vital for this final run in of games. I don't think anyone here would rather we had Bentley over him in our current squad. I fail to see what people expect of Pienaar after a few games.

His style reminds me of the way Owen Hargreaves used to play although I would argue that Pienaar might have more ability on the ball. I don't think he would look at all out of place in a major final.

You don't see the irony in criticising Crouch for running offside, then wanting to play Defoe?

I thought Crouch was terrific and played a central part in the game. He unsettled Milan greatly.

Agreed. Pienaar and Kranjcar are very different players and as such can expect to feature at different times. I would say they are on a par in Premier League terms, as much as you can compare them.

Decent functional player, not devoid of ability by any means. Lacks composure to shoot or pass well in the final third it seems, and nowhere near the danger or geniusnof Kranjcar, but a useful player to have on the bench when we want to add some grit. A bit like a less skilful Steed I guess.
