Thought deserved a thread pretty big news really screws Newcastle. Means they can’t artificially raise revenue to ease FFP issues. If this rule was in place before may have really put Saudis off.

Now is the time for rival fans of those 18 clubs to started being vocal. The Premier League stinks as much as the proposed ESL and these fundamental flaws need to be shouted about.

What odds can I get on a couple of premier league chairmen being killed and chopped up in an embassy somewhere?

It’ll be interesting to see if Boris and his gang try to intervene. They went in hard on the ESL but were actively pushing the Saudi takeover.

Problem is Newcastle will now be able to throw the best lawyers at the premier league, just like City have always done to make up their own rules

Considering one of the key figures in the takeover has donated large sums of money to the Tory party, it’s unlikely that Johnson won’t intervene in some way.

Ha, you know the answer to that already. Newcastle's new director Jamie Reuben is a massive donor and friend of the Tories. If anything Boris would try to help the flow of Saudi money coming in, he certainly wouldn't intervene to oppose

I don't think Boris will intervene.
He intervened over the ESL, which was disgraceful, but he knew it was a popular move
Intervening over this would be deeply unpopular and the opposition parties would give him a terrible time over it.

Yeah I think showing he wanted to stop the super league made him look like a hero. And unless he thinks he can get elected just on votes from Newcastle, trying to publicly stop this makes him look like the bad guy, something no politician wants.

Of course Boris won’t intervene, too much money being funnelled into individual and party coffers, as I’ve said before on a few threads let’s not piss off the oil producers….

Exactly, it would be political poison to be seen to intervene against the Prem on this. He will absolutely keep quiet.
Labour might put some pressure on him to back the Prem stance on this though. Boris won't want to upset the Saudis, but at the same time openly supporting them over what is pretty much what he fought against re the ESL, damaging footballs integrity etc, would leave him wide open

Probably was fairly close to market rate though
The good thing about the Prem ban though, AFAICS is it's just banning such sponsorship outright, regardless of market rate.
Of course, more details will emerge, lawyers have their say. But basically, it's very difficult to overrule a footballing decision made by the Prem over its own rule book
Also to make enemies of your own governing body is very high risk for City and Newcastle
