Thinking about it, Atalanta wanting to stall the deal/announcement until they've signed a replacement makes a lot of sense.

All the ITKs seem extremely confident that it's going to get done, while the official channels are cooling off a bit. Wishful thinking, but perhaps it's been agreed in principle and Atalanta are publicly denying/delaying it so they don't get bent over the barrel in negotiations with Augsburg for Romero's replacement. Also good PR since it looks like Atalanta are playing hardball to their fans.

Or maybe we simply haven't agreed a fee yet... :cautious:

It feels as though the hold up is more Atalantas end. Fab Pat comes across as a man with a plan to be honest I felt pretty underwhelmed with how the manager search went but getting Gollini, Gill and possibly Tomiyasu in so early does seem like a plan is being executed.

There are points and times where you just have to pay the money and get a key player in.
As much as I like this approach, it's a dangerous game to play. It might only be £5m-£10m difference on this occasion, but if we just "pay the asking price" on 3 or 4 signings that could equate to being an extra £30m over the course of a transfer window. That in itself is money which could go towards another signing.

I fully understand why we are often reluctant just to "pay up" like a lot of our fans want us to.

I agree in some parts but we wont do this with every target. We know how valuable the CB and CF positions are going to be this summer. Therefore once we recognize our number one target (Romero) , then you pay more and get him in.

Its different for a signing such as Gil where you dont necessarily have to overpay but in key positions, as Paratici has quoted, you pay extra and dont lose that target.

Why are people bemoaning the fact that we aren't stumping up the money for this guy? We've got the player onside and we've obviously got Atalanta happy to sell and now we're hearing they have an interest in a replacement CB and yet people refuse to read the runes and they just go into doom mode.
My experience dealing with Italian clients is that the last 5% of negotiations take as long as the first 80% and, let's be honest we've got that on both sides, it's all part of the fun.
Lighten up everyone there really is no need to panic.

But is it? Are we really quibbling over 5 or 10 million at all? I'm genuinely not convinced we are.

People will naturally overreact when they see something they don't like, the same as when they get overexcited when we are linked to a good player. I have been consistent the whole time regarding the deal and I am no less confident now than I was a week ago. It's just a game of chess currently but I would be amazed if we didn't sign him. We have already sold Foyth and Toby and Sanchez and CCV are very likely to be sold also you can guarantee we will be bringing in two CB's alongside Tomiyasu. I expect one of them to be Romero.

it’s thing like this that make me realize that the media are good at what they do, spin a story for us to lose our mind.

thanks for the info H88.
