I wouldn't be suprised personally if we were to go with 5 full backs until January and take it from there. At Inter Conte often substituted both wingbacks (at reasonable times) with the 5 sub rule, something you can't do if just one of them is out injured or suspended, if you only have four. With Doherty coming back from injury, Perisic having a pre-season injury and Sessegnon have never completed more than 6 league games on the bounce for us, four WBs might be a little bit of a risk.

Yeah thats a great point.

With the energy they have to put in and the amount of games we have, they will certainly need to share the minutes.

I wonder of this is why we had mutterings of targetting a utility WB.

Has Conte ever had 5 wing backs at previous clubs?

I think Emerson survives the summer due to a lack of suitors but also just being a decent bloke who’s popular with the squad and a grafter who is taking on board Conte’s coaching. I think it’s quite clear he’s not the level or profile we need going forward but it wouldn’t be a blow if he’s still around come the end of the window like it would be with some others.

I think he’s no worse than Sessegnon who people seem to favour despite them both having similar attacking deficiencies. They are both about the same age too.

Sessegnon is much more composed in the final 3rd and will also look to run at the defense. Royal looks lost up there.

Having said that, I would probably just keep him to help integrate Richarlison.

Completely agree mate, think we will stick with 5 and that your bang on as to why.

Reggi will be the one who goes and the 5 will be:
Doherty, Emerson, Spence
Perisic, Sessengon.

As you say we probably need 5 given the injury risk of Doherty and Sess and the 5 sub rule and playing in 4 competitions and if Conte wants to rotate them.

I said it last season about Doherty and got laughed at, he’s a really important part of the squad because he can cover both sides. He then went on his good end of season run. He’ll stay because he has impressed Conte with his attitude and did well towards the end of last season. The interview he did this week is really good and worth a read.

I wonder if the club have changed their stance in that with Reguilon being available we’ve still been linked with multiple left wing backs. I know Doherty and Emerson can play there but they’re more of an emergency stand in that offering us anything positive.

If we bring in Spence i'd sell him, Reguilon and keep Gil around to cover. In emergencies Davies could play LWB now we have Lenglet

There's no guarantee that Spence will hit the ground running. Then there's the injury history of Sess. I would keep Emerson and Doherty at least until Jan.

I think we need 5 personally. Sessegnon is an injury risk and with Doherty being able ish to play both sides think we’ll be fine for managing game time. If we had 2 injury’s at full back we’d be screwed

He went to Korea didn’t he? Doubt Conte is taking players who are leaving
Disagree. He is planning for what he’s got. I don’t think he will end up selling Royal or Doherty u til maybe next season but if we had landed Spence ahead of Korea I suspect one of those two would have been left behind.

He doesnt though. One of the thing I want to see him do is do exactly that, isolate the FB and go at him

Royal started playing well towards the end of last season, you don’t give up on players after 1 season in exchange for an unknown from the championship.

Weird reason to keep a £25 million player. Plus we have Lucas, assuming all Brazilians like each other. If not I'm sure we can just pay some fun Brazilian guy 20 grand a year to be nice to Richarlison
