If a display like today is superior to anything Spence can offer (according to Conte), I cannot fathom how utterly piss poor Spence must be in training. Emerson is the worst RB we have had since Chris Gunther and Alan Hutton. He makes me pine for Aurier. And Trippier is Roberto Carlos compared to this awful excuse for a RWB.

Truly baffling what Conte sees in him. Being a great trainer, is admirable. But if he performs like a 47 year old, hung over Sunday afternoon pub team player, what’s the point? He is a liability going forward. A mistake waiting to happen playing out the back. And prone to making two or three flat out catastrophic mistakes per game when defending.

Enough is enough.
You reckon if you laced up a pair of boots you'd have a similar output to Emerson?

I don't mind the bloke at all. Covers a lot of ground and gets himself into good positions. He does need to work on his crossing and decision making. People critizisized Kyle Walker for not crossing and passing the ball backwards. We just seem to complain about eveything.

If he hits the form that he did at the business end of last season we will be happy, because he was immense and helped us to that top 4 spot.

I'd rather cheer him on than be a boo boy

As ever, on an internet forum, views tend to be more polarised than they probably are.

My view on this guy is:
- His effort and application is first rate, and as such, he deserves all our support
- He's a very capable defender
- But his touch is poor
- He's not that quick, and is a little lumbering
- His crossing is poor

Honestly, I think we'd be better with other players at RWB. He's a good RB, not a good RWB.

But he gives it his all, so if Conte picks him (personally, I wouldn't), as with all players (unless they obviously don't care) we back him

Such a lovely balanced view....
I remember it was like this with Sissoko in the early days. People would just constantly be on his back

His main attribute is his engine. He can be up to support attacks when we're in the opposition third and then has the athleticism to get back and defend(very capably) when we are under it. This is why I think Conte rates him. His system is based on overloads in transition. It is crucial that the wing backs are able to get up and down in this way or the system falls down. Yes Royal has some technical deficiencies but the fact he has the engine to cover both ends of the pitch, without being a defensive liability, is what Conte values.

This is why Doherty isn't getting in ahead of him at the moment - he just doesn't have the engine to support the team at both ends of the pitch for 90 minutes.

I would have been using Doherty from the bench more often - say 75 minute - to ease him in. What we saw last night was 5 subs coming on together who have hardly played any football for months. We all expected the WBs to be subbed off every game after 70 minutes and for them to rotate starting when we have 3 games a week. That is what has happened on the left hand side. But on the right it appears to be bling faith in Royal who is clearly useless offensively.

We all know we need an upgrade who actually fits the system. None of us knows what the issue is with Spence and Doherty is just making his way back after injury. Until we can actually do something about it there's really no point continually aiming pelters at Emerson or Conte for picking him. It's frustrating, but we were told we wouldn't fix everything in one window.

I feel as though Conte trusts Emerson more in the ‘tougher’ games for his defensive work.

Attacking wise though, Doherty should really be starting in the ‘favourable’ games.

Emerson is poor positionally, technically, athletically. Very simple for me, and I supported him long enough. He weakens us, and certainly does not strengthen us.
