Truly unexpected and welcome improvement from Royal
If it is really unexpected, you have not been paying attention.

Royal has been putting in this kind of effort, and execution, since he got here. He has been working hard at improving his performances - but the biggest difference really is the tweak that Conte made to bring Royal inside when he is attacking, that allows Royal to make shorter passes, and it freed up Deki to work the outside.

Nah, definitely unexpected. The majority of fans (Spurs and other) have seen a woefully poor full back up until recently. Massive kudos to him for having the balls to turn it around, but it's been a surprise.
Yes definitely unexpected to people who aren't very good at understanding football or footballers. Which is why our Coaching staff - whose entire very successful careers are all about understand footballers - continued to choose Emerson as our No 1 RWB despite all these geniuses who "expected" Spence or Docherty to take that place.

The only thing that's been "woefully poor" about Emerson is the reaction of a minority of our support base who should be ashamed of themselves.

Which has worked brilliantly except that as soon as Deki has been given responsibility for crosses into the box he's now spraying them like Emerson of 2022 :D

Gooner mate thinks Royal is much better going inside, when he ventures forward. His work rate is impressive,as well.

Good game again today but not as effective going forward as last weekend. Touch and passing not on it to same degree. Did like how he works hard to get a challenge in if/when he loses possession (albeit that should be a minimum expectation of anyone). Also thought the chance he had leading up to Skipp’s goal was crying out for a “Carlos Alberto” outside of the foot across the keeper. Still worked out for us so no biggie. Would like to see him get a rest on Weds now.

Another good game. He has really stepped up. Defensively he was always decent but his willingness to go forward is showing and his energy levels are excellent.

He has limitations going forward but I think he is simplifying things and looking for the easier pass to someone to take it forward Rather than perhaps trying to take on his man and not get anywhere.

Most funny thing for me is how he always finds a calm solution with a ball when under pressure.

I am panicking but he cold as ice.

Anyone else with such feeling?

My only issue with is that we’ve created space for him to go central when really we could do with Kulu centrally. Glad he’s improving but I think it’s gonna need mixing up bit otherwise it could become predictable really fast.

Kulu has played inside at various times this season - he really is not comfortable there. He probably needs a preseason working in just that area - but, I think it might just be that he will never be that versatile, and that he prefers to play along the line.

Guy has been a fucking revelation recently, undroppable. Would go as far as saying hes just as key as Kane in the side right now.

Excellent points and well made as well... I'm still buzzing from result though... ?

Funny that as his upturn in form in some part has been because Deki is keeping the width and Emerson is breaking into midfield more, not always but if you're looking for it you can see it.

He’s been superb recently.
He’s not a wing back so the criticism was harsh…….his wayward shots and crosses didn’t help, but wow, his performances have been great!
Incredible determination to prove his ‘own’ fans wrong.
A great player/personality to have in the team.

I will forever be smug that I stood by him during the dark days

The collective insanity that swept through the fanbase scapegoating Emerson was wild. I mean I was standing there in the South just mystified as he played no better or worse than any other Spurs player but was the brunt of all our frustrations with the performances.

Even now podcasts like The Extra Inch still can't bring themselves to acknowledge not just that he wasn't the cause of all our ills but is OBJECTIVELY the best performing Right Back in the Premier League so far in 2023.

He is what he always was - a young, talented defender with some offensive limitations. Just mentally stronger than most as it happens
