Baffled why all the Sky pundits thought Royal wasn’t fouled in the build-up to the disallowed goal. The Everton player ran into Royal and took his legs.

It’s because he has a tendency to drop and roll on the ball when he gets any contact from behind. He is very effective at getting those fouls called and he had a soft one called in his favor a few minutes before. But the one they scored was a pretty cut and dry foul. Gomes barges into his back and gets his leg inside Emersons. No attempt to play the ball and not shoulder to shoulder.

Thought he played well - had a few moments of panic/panicked passes, but as did others and I think there was a just a general air after going 2 up if not adding the last one percent to passes across the team.

versatile defender, no obvious weakness, dedicated, not a bad option to have at all.

To be honest the foul is just your run of the mill one where a defender draws contact and goes down. It was just odd that this time the ref didn't blow since 99% of the time they do. Var had to get involved but the ref should do better. Having said that Emerson was poor in that instance and got away with it. Other than that he did well today on his weaker side. We do need to sort a left back though assuming Davies will stay at centre back.

For me there was more than enough contact for the ref to call it like you said, but thays not emerson being poor and "getting away with it", if he wasnt fouled he wouldve still been in possession and he did a great job protecting possession when pressed for the whole game, so theres nothing to say he was going to end up in trouble.

Yeah . Much better on commentary on game of the day right now. Both seemed puzzled it wasn't called a foul at the time.

Not sure where the controversy was there tbh

Absolutely put your body between your opponent and the ball and the only way an opponent can get possession is by a foul

this is exactly what happened - the ref should have blown for it - the lino should have flagged for it

officials are scared to make decisions and less inclined to knowing VaR will basically ref the major moments for them

I was watching on premier sports and they all thought it was a clear foul.
That's football

I wonder if Royal could play the 6 role for a couple of games.

Its not a huge difference to playing the inverted fullback role - and if Romero and Van de Ven were both starting, he would have a couple of easy passing partners.

I just saw this now. i agree entirely. I actually think he offers more than both PEH and Skipp...
I would have him as a 6 in against brighton

You’re both bonkers. Control of the ball is not his strong point.
by the way…
Oh what fun it is to see Villa lose away!!!….5 mins to go.

Can be back up to Porro, even on left in case of emergency (though not as 1st or even 2nd choice backup), but can't be used as backup to CB. Davies can do the shift with proper CB pairing, but Royal can't play there for longer stint no matter who is playing alongside

You got skated in large part for being adamant Phillips should start over him and the manager is "fecking ridiculous" for not making a switch.

You also thought brighton were a perfect opportunity for Phillips with all their injuries but looking at that game now its a good thing he wasnt involved.

Great effort from him today. GLC's assist to Son seems to be getting the limelight but i thought Emerson's pass out to Brennan Johnson for the third goal was just as good.

So many people knock Emerson but he has proved so valuable these last couple of months. I thought he did really well yesterday. Whilst he should not be long term back up for CB he can play across the back line so is a great squad player.
