But what happens if Gareth and Erik suffer big injuries? You never know. Too much of financial risk.

Not really. If you take that sort of view then we should only buy players for less than a million. If Bale and Lamela both got career ending injuries next season, it wouldn't destroy us financially as they will be insured.

I get that argument but then I find it irks me too.

That's just playing devil's advocate with the 'injury' angle.

The game is full of 'what if's' and you can't let hypothetical situations like the one you mentioned dictate your transfer policy.

Soldado, Paulinho and Chadli could all break their legs in the next week - Should we not of bought them? (Almost certainly not going to happen but just trying to remonstrate with your point)

Regardless of if Bale stays or goes, we are clearly ambitious and willing to spend this summer. Before the start of the summer, the claim would have been even if Bale does go we will just use the money for the stadium, well we are not, we are investing in the team.

if bale's sold for £90m and we spend £90m on the team then that's not "willing to spend" and "ambitious" in my eyes.

if we buy Lamela our first team would be out of this world this season!

Bale/chadil - Soldado/Ade - Lamela/lennon
Paulinho/Siggy - Dembele/Holtby
Capoue/Sandro
Coentrao/Rose - Ver/kab/Vald/Daws - Walker/Naughton

Why? Like I said, before the summer started you would have sad that any money from Bale will just go to the Stadium, and it is not, we are investing in the squad. If you want to measure our ambition you should ask yourself even if Bale goes will our squad be weaker than the end of last season. If it is not then we have clearly been ambitious. The season when Ronaldo left Utd, they spent around 20 million, does that mean they aren't ambitious and willing to spend?

There is no winning with some fans, if we sold Bale for 100 million and spent 150 million, there would be people saying, well we only spent 50 million. If you are looking for teams who consistently just piss cash away then may I suggest a shirt in the blue variety, maybe a PSG, Chelsea or City one.

i'd've said we'll have a break even summer. there's no way of comparing a squad without bale to one with him, i imagine you're intentionally underplaying his importance to the team to strengthen your point. yes, utd weren't ambitious, the glazers were sucking them dry. who said anything about pissing cash away? you're the one who thinks spending 35m on lamela without bale going is possible and a good idea, not me ...

He'd be a #10. It wouldn't be in place of Bale, it would be anywhere across the front 3 or just behind a front 2. Another option, another fantastic option. Expensive, but.. well.. sod it, if they are spending and thinking about Bale leaving this or next season then having the replacement already bedded into the team is a great idea. Almost as if someone has thought ahead, unlike previous big sales...

I don't really follow this Bale plays on the right, he really doesn't, he plays a free role and pretty much turns up where he finds the space. True he scores a number of his goals cutting in from the right and setting himself up for a left foot shot, but his real strength is that he doesn't stay in one place or limit his attacks. So from a playing standpoint I see no conflict with him and Lamela, they'll interchange a bit, they'll certainly swap passes and Soldado's intelligent enough to drift left if both are drawing defenders on the right .
The money aspect is different though, there's a school of thought that we may be spending the Bale money this season before clubs add a windfall price on certain players but we can only spend so much net and I imagine our net spend so far of roughly £42/43 mill (assuming Capoue is done) is getting near the edge of that. We can probably get £30 mill selling Parker, Hudd, Siggy and Livermore, Townsend, maybe £6 mill from selling Benny -but that would mean we have to spend some money on a lb and arguably still need a CB, we might sell Ade or JD to raise a bit more and Lamela though not a striker should be able to compensate in terms of goals. So for the right price buying Lamela and keeping Bale is possibly do able, but I imagine if Levy gets the deal he wants for Bale he'd sell him because that is Levy, he's prudent and anyway could get maybe Morata and Rodriguez in the deal and wipe out the net spend and still have a few mill left

Whilst I agree that looks an absolutely fantastic selection of players.......................I'm not quite sure it's "Out of this world" enough to not need a keeper ;)

Yes, it is out of this world without a keeper, for we'll have the football fiend protecting our goal.

Probably around 30 million euros

I'd say about £25-26 (which is approximately several mil above his most recent valuation in June). This pattern seems to stay pretty consistent with transfer monetary values in Serie A. Each Euro league has its own valuation schedule, method, etc.

PS. Hehehe...Didn't pay attention, you mentioned Euros, so yes - pretty accurate on your part. ;)

I think this deal will get done regardless of bale! Thats IMO. Maybe need to sell someone or two but will probably get done all being well.

I believe it would be very unlikely that we'll see Bale and Lamela in Spurs shirts next season. But, if we were able to afford it then the fact that Lamela plays in a similar position to Bale wouldn't really be an issue as I think Soldado will be the only player in the front 3 that will have a set position. I could see Lamela and Bale having free roles with a solid midfield behind them.
