Funny you say that - my 'murican buddies all tell me how much of a girls sport "soccer" is over there. Like our schools had netball, their schools all have football programs that are just rammed with girls, who all idolise the national team.

I mean, I didn't ask why any of these middle aged blokes know so much about school girls, but probably for the best.
its true that the women's national team has a bigger following than the men's. Title IX is a law that says universities have to offer scholarships in equal number of sports for men and women. Not that many schools offer scholarships for men's soccer because of this, but most of them have a women's team. Id say thats a big reason why parents are more likely to push athletically minded girls into soccer more than boys.
