I will say Bale didn’t do anywhere near enough defensive work and think that added pressure and just invited them down their left side. Not a shock the two goals came from there.

The guy hasn't played since January except for the odd couple of minutes off the bench in February. He was always going to be off the pace. Even with him not able to contribute defensively we still shouldn't be shipping three goals on the last 10 mins against a team like West ham. If his fitness really is still so bad that he's enough of a liability that were likely to concede three goals with him on the pitch then he shouldn't have been brought on at all. It's not his fault. The team as a whole were arrogant and thought they had it in the bag. That couple with the bizarre decision by Mourinho to give up control of the middle of the park with the other subs cost us the game not Bale.

Needs some time midweek. Will only be a couple of matches and he will be sharp. The problem will be if he has a weak midfield behind him

I can't believe they didn't pick up on the penalty.
Bale was pushed over in the box as he was shooting.
VAR is a joke

I think he's still got it in an attacking sense and could be a real beast for us.

However, I do worry about him defensively. Under 'Arry and AVB in the pre-pressing era I don't recall him having a huge amount of defensive responsibility, and I doubt he was tracking back a huge amount for Madrid.

With Son playing high up on the left our right sided forward is usually someone industrious, and both Bergwijn and, especially Lucas, put in a real shift tracking runners and covering passing lanes.

Bale on the other hand was playing more like a latter-day Ronaldo or Messi - just kinda conserving energy and looking for moments to pounce - but without really doing any of the hard defensive graft. That's fine if the entire team is built around you, but you can't afford to have luxury players in the Premier League in 2020 and I really think it caused us problems today. I genuinely don't think we'd have lost if we'd brought on Lucas or Lamela in place of Bergwijn (although I also don't think you can blame Bale for the loss either as it was a total freak result).

The amount of analysis he’s getting off the back of twenty minutes, post injury, having barely played all calendar year is over the top.

He came on, looked a bit rusty, showed a glimpse of skill and intelligence, probably should have had a penalty for his missed shot, didn’t work overly hard, had one terrible touch and one lovely cushioned touch and was in no way to blame for the horrors that transpired with him on the pitch.

I thought they were also supposed to check fouls in the lead up to goals as well and as much as winks should have put his foot through it he was completely wiped out by I think Ogbonna to stop him blocking the shot as well. I think sometimes the moment gets missed in the excitement/disappointment unless your man united and they restart the game.

The only good thing to take from today is that we are still only 5 points off the top; it could be worse. There's a long way to go between now and the end of the season and I still think we'll do well.

Agree totally - albeit we always seem to be 5 points off - Wasn't that the gap we had to make up on Leicester? And in champions League places last season after the re start. 5 points. I hate 5 points. ?

Agree with that I thought he got blocked by Ogbonna and it wasn't even subjective.

Really I think we need to be more intelligent ****s. Against Newcastle, Dier should have been screaming in the refs face about being pushed in the back for the handball shout. We also should have mobbed the referee over the stupid Newcastle handballs in their box and forced VAR to look at it.

Against West Ham, Bale should have walked up to the ref as he's blowing his whistle and shoved the **** over and said "oh well you got your whistle off". Now go back and check VAR. Winks apparently as well was fouled in the lead up to their goal.

We really need to accept that FIFA and FA refs have created a sickening situation in football and we might as well take advantage of it rather than being bummed by it each week. Learn how to play VAR rather than being played by it.

That was a foul on him. The guy started pushing him before the ball left his foot. Soft but still a foul.
