And just what I expected the original person posting the quote changed the intent of the sentence.

Now here is him actually saying it:

Sounds to me like he said he came because he wanted to play football and then says but going into the euros wanted to be match fit.

Doesn't it read differently without that "but" And the "first and foremost" and the context of the question

What is he supposed to say. At the moment he is a Real Madrid player on a 1 season loan with Tottenham.

Who even say's we want him back next year?

Jose is doing an awful job with him, he should be first name on the team sheet and he was dropped against Villa.

Total waste of having him back this year as things stand. You can see when he had a run of games the difference he could make.

When he resigned it was all about winning trophies, nothing about getting fit and playing for a year only ( not that he would admit it). There's obviously something going on for him to change his tune so much.

He's being asked a question specifically about his preparation for the euros, he says he first joined to play football but yes (to answer the interviewers question, being fit for the euros was part of his plan). Why would he start talking about Trophies and shit in the context of that question? It's perfectly okay for him to have wales in his thinking.

He is just stating facts though isn't he?

1) He came to play football. As most footballers, maybe apart from goalies who identify as backups, go to a club to play football.
2) He want's to be fit for the Euros. Most footballers on a national team in the Euros wants to be fit and play there. Even Harry Winks.
3) He has one year left with Real Madrid. Most footballers wouldn't openly admit that they plan to not return if they are primarily looking for their club to concede to whatever they can before leaving.

So with this rather harmless statement, he is just looking out for himself making sure that Madrid knows that he'll be back if they don't offer concessions. Weirdly it even plays into the hands of Levy, because should there be a chance in hell that Tottenham wants to retain his services for one more year, Bale has underlined Levy's negotiation powers, too (deal, or he'll be back with you). It's just really a f-you to Madrid more than to anyone else.

Always in the back of my mind was his plan was to build towards the euros and to do that he had to hold off from playing for us for a few months to get into what he considers peak form

Those comments a while back from mourinho saying he has does all he can and gareth is doing all he can is making sense

I get that and you're right in that context its perfectly acceptable. However it still doesn't clarify the disparity between winning trophies at Spurs and returning to Madrid. Unless he always meant staying for one year and winning lots of trophies in that year.

The vibe of the original interview was that he was here to drive us forward and onto the next level. Its a different vibe we're getting now even if you are correct about the context.

This is an absolute non-story. He says his priority is to play football "first and foremost" and an added benefit of that would be to be fit for the euros. Then he hasn't planned further than the end of the current season.

Never underestimate our fans insatiable desire to turn one of our players into a pariah.

As important as Hugo's interview was, it has turned into fodder for fans to turn up the heat on whichever player they've taken a disliking to.

I can picture Zidane somewhere laughing at those comments.

Nothing wrong with what he said though, I do agree it was badly worded/bad timing.
Yup, Zizou will be laughing his bald head off when he can’t sign Mbappe as he’s lumbered with £30m per year on Bale...

I think he and his agent always want to put pressure on Madrid. Madrid don't want him back so him saying yeah I'm going back reduces their leverage a bit I reckon.

Maybe but he should know that fans take things on face value and this won't help his cause from that perspective. He could have dodged the returning part. If he genuinely loved it here and wanted to stay he could have answered that part of the question very differently.

But he had. He planned to win trophies with Tottenham.

If his main priority is being fit for the Summer how much is he going to be putting it on the line fighting for us in the last couple of months. No way is he going to push it in case of injury.

Personally I wouldn't play him again this season.

Come on Trix, this is the knee-jerk reaction I expect from the general populace of SC, but not you. Bale said nothing except cookie cutter responses to even more cookie cutter questions. What do you want him to say, profess his dying love of the club, and that Real and Spurs should work something out?
