I thought we'd struggle to get him for less than £45m. I guess Newcastle's lack of interest and Leicester wanting to do a deal quickly helped things along.

Really looking forward to watching him play for us.
I'm not really interested in oneupmanship but i don't think there was a lack of interest from Newcastle, i'm pretty sure they were extremely interested but when thing progressed it was clear Maddison preferred Spurs (probably for family reasons but we can beleive it was simply because we are a superior club). Either way, it left us a dream run at a player who, quite honestly, shouldn't be signing for a team who've just finished 8th ! A genuine 'difference maker' type signing.

Maddison as a 10 with Bissouma and Bentancur protecting the back 4 and transitioning play from defence to attack probably won’t be good enough against the very best teams in the league but it will be a big upgrade on the last 3/4 years.
I think that's about as good as anyone in the league outside of City and maybe (a Rice boosted) Arsenal. Short of a massive outlay, I think that's as good as we could possibly expect. If they stay fit, that's a good enough midfield to get top 4 - it's the defense that could/would let us down

Obviously Sarr/Skipp/PEH will have a chance to impress until Bentancur recovers but I’ll be very surprised if Bissouma, Bentancur and Maddison in front isn’t our strongest trio.

Why wouldn’t they be good enough against the top teams?

All three are top players?

He'll play as a ten behind Kane in a 4-2-3-1 imo.
This is how I see it too - Bissouma and Bentancour as the two, with the latter joining the attack to ideally give us Kane, Son, Deki, Maddison, and Bentancour in the final third with one of the fullbacks supporting.

I’d be happy with that 👌

Be interesting to see what the payroll sites like Sportrac & Capology when they update for next season put Maddison's salary at, with a 5 year contract in his prime time as a footballer he was obviously looking to sign a good deal.
Eddie Howe was quoted as saying they would not break the wage structure at Newcastle even though they are happy to pay big transfer fees.

Sure, however you want to interpret it, them stepping back likely helped us get a lower fee.

Apologies if this has been shared before, only two away from Ronaldo in the all time free kick goal scorers in the PL.

Fantastic signing

I'm sure last season we sometimes waited days for announcements after hearing it was complete. Really like these quick announcements.
I wonder if the quick announcements are also deliberate, to offset against past criticisms and to reinforce that we are being “proactive” in the market.

I'm pretty sure the only reason he is saying this is because they are more restricted on payroll by FFP. Transfer fees you can get around with inflated sponsorships (City) but I think there's a rule in place stopping massive growth in total payroll spend.

Reality is they are ahead of schedule and it won't be an overnight process for them to compete with City, despite what their fans seem to think.

Yeah, i'm certainly expecting them to slip out of the top 4 next season, their squad will struggle to compete in 4 comps and i genuinely don't think they are 'that' good just yet, they rode the crest of a feel good wave last season and if anything they'll have the pressure of expectation this season. Obviously they'll get there at some point, once their owners have bent the rules enough.
