Likewise, I don't buy the notion that we can only prioritize one or the other because it's what our merry-go-round of managers fail to do while limping forward with squads they didn't build. That isn't sufficient proof to me that we can't do it, but is rather indication to me just how important stability, an idea for a squad, and depth in that idea is. With more depth and more balance, we should have no excuse beating a side such as Dnipro (who we knocked out last season ourselves) and possibly even Sevilla. Hell, there's no excuse for losing out to the sides who have knocked us out in recent years. We've simply played weakened squads bred from turnover and largely consisting of squads with players having played on weekends and players not at all suited to the manager's wishes.

As a result, we've assembled a squad with very little balance indeed. We are fully capable of building a squad of depth and balance, even if it isn't the quality of those in the top four, capable of competing on multiple fronts. We just simply have to afford Poch the time to get rid of the players he doesn't want and bring in players willing to come in and compete, as well as promote youth who are capable. Getting rid of players who aren't suited and are clogging up places such as Paulinho, Dembele, Soldado, Chiriches, etc would be extremely beneficial for our cup runs as we get rid of the dross and bring in a) better players and b) players more capable of establishing a balance such that inferior teams aren't outplaying us.
I agree, but I see those weaknesses as equally applicable to our league campaign. And addressing them correctly equally beneficial. Where you and I disagree, I think, is in where the benefit would be seen first. I think it would reflect first in league form. A better balanced, more stable squad is more likely to be consistent and therefore less likely to drop points unexpectedly. But not necessarily so much more likely to play the sort of higher quality football that would be required in the latter stages of the EL. I still think that's a harder competition to win than perhaps you do. Anyway, good discussion!

Those who know Wimmer better than me - would I be correct to say he'd be competing for Verthongen's place? If so shame because it's the other CB spot that needs replacing right now, though sure Dier will one day make it his.

We have no backup for Vertonghen. So that is the position in most need. Give Fazio another year. Mertesacker was terrible his first season.

I think he just like Dier when he first come to whl, young, not PL experienced, and need to adapt and working hard to understand PL playing style. One thing i knew, he's a spurs fan.

He's gonna be excellent for us, of that I'm confident

After the top outgoings of the deadwood in our midfield including Paulinho and Capoue, the next biggest transfers out need to be Kaboul and Chiriches to ensure Wimmer gets the time he needs to show he can help us.

I think we will see some real addition by subtraction in the midfield first, but also in the backline as a close second

Ah thats wicked! I love it when you see such enthusiasm these days as there doesn't seem to be a lot of it in players!
Exactly. A player with attitude like this gives himself a much better chance of making it in this league.

Don't know exactly. Seems he has been a Spurs fan since we first linked to signing him. I know it from his comment here http://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/news/kevin-wimmer-110615/

He said "When I think about home games at White Hart Lane, they will be special, with the stadium full and the atmosphere very loud, very intense. The atmosphere must be amazing on matchday. I remember watching the game against Arsenal when Tottenham won 2-1, that was fantastic. For sure, I’m looking forward to that" - I don't know exactly, the game Kevin mentioned on his comment was on February 7th, 2015 (this must be the match he watched, imo) or March 3rd, 2013.

And now, he showed a great enthusiasm to wears Lilywhite Shirt (on his twitter account), so he has been or he become a Spurs fan, that's not too important ;)

Sounds like he knew he might be moving here so watched our matches and loved everything about it, which is great. Like you said he clearly sounds excited which is great attitude to have on arrival. Hope we don't suck it out of him lol
