As much as I appreciate Lucas, I was fine coming into the season as him being our 5th choice forward. As I compared him to options across the top of the PL on a similar level I thought he was on par.

I was surprised we didn't try and move him due to his contract and being able to squeeze any value out that's left. I know he wants to go back to Brazil but I've read we have an option to extend him a year, which I wonder if the club will do to get any sort of transfer fee.

I thought for sure we would flip him with Adama, due to AT's similar contract situation, another player that causes/is chaos, younger, and a FP favorite

We do regardless of his fitness. He isn't good enough
Would have disagreed with this until we signed Kulusevski. But once you sprinkle a little bit of class in to one of our weakest positions it's difficult to believe anything less will do.

Agree with this but would just counter that I think it makes sense to have one-two unpredictable player in your front line depth. I'd take Kulu all day long, but for some reason there's a few matches a season where you just need to throw on a Lucas to cause total mayhem even if he doesn't know where he's going himself ??

Feels like another Lamela situation where its time to sell. He's been a good servant but we won't renew and need to look forward. Just need him fit enough to sell in January.

He's on a free in January. Doubt anyone would offer much of anything of value. He'll be off to Brazil on a free in the Summer.

His contract goes out in the summer of 2024 according to Transfermarkt.

Ah, that's correct.
I believe that's only if we take the option though, so will be interesting to see what happens there. From the clubs POV you want to get some sort of fee if possible. At the same time, you want to honor Lucas' wishes to return to Brazil and make that possible for him, so I'm torn on what to do tbh!

From Football.London - "Lucas has confirmed in his homeland that his current deal actually has one more year to run and will expire in 2023, with Tottenham then having the option of extending for an extra 12 months."

I'm not sure extending a contract to get a fee is good business with players over a certain age. Brazilian clubs will probably be deterred from signing him and I can't imagine anyone else will pay much for him at this stage. We'll be left paying his wages and not getting much in return.

This guy scored a second half hat-trick, including a 'deep into injury time' winner in a Champions League semi-final, to take us for the only time in our entire history into a Champions League / European Cup final. Whatever he does in future, he will always retain super-hero status for us. He is now coming to the end of his career and is troubled by a painful achilles injury. His contract ends at the end of this season and he will almost certainly either retire or move back to a club in Brazil. Ultimately we do need another forward, and one who can compete with Kulusevski on the right flank, i.e. Lucas' position. And we ideally need someone this winter. But let's allow Lucas to see out his contract with some respect.

We won’t get a fee for him, especially if he wants to go back home.
Pompey at home if he can get a ten minute cameo and a send off from all in the stadium for everything he’s achieved would be the right move in my book, totally deserved.

With our squad we’re not in a position to just let him go. Who’s coming in to replace him?

If he's only getting a few games a season I don't think that we can realistically renew in the summer and as others have said, there's no way we do that to try to get a fee. Only a handful of Premiership clubs would be likely to pay a fee for a player of his age and record and none of them would want or need him. Plus he'd be unlikely to sign up for a lesser club e.g. Everton, Villa etc. if he wants to go home

But I'm also not sure we try to move him on in Jan without a replacement or if Gil can keep improving. He's not on stupid wages and he always gives 100% and usually causes opponents problems - if just by taking defenders away, even if his end-product is lacking.

Also he's been a great servant and never seems to complain about lack of opportunities. During the dark times of Moaner and Nuno he was probably the guy who always seemed to be actually trying

About Lucas Moura, we didn’t have him from the start of the season. And we are continuing to not have him. He has this problem, he is struggling a lot to find a solution. For sure it’s a difficult situation. Because I have a good player in my squad, but he’s never available. It’s like you don’t have him. It’s a pity because I repeat: we are talking about a good player, a good guy, but he is struggling a lot to solve this problem. I don’t know, I don’t know what in the future happens about him.
