Is the guy really that good anyway? Liverpool were looking but haven’t moved. Others were saying he was dreadful in the u21s. Doesn’t sound ready for premiership football.

I think people are probably reacting to a couple of bad looking mistakes that are doing the rounds. But I can show you those of van set vijk too but we all know he is a good defender. The simple tidy stuff never really seems to get the same attention.

Was listening to a podcast, can’t remember which, that had a guy who covered German football or had watched a lot of games. He said vdv was a very steady and calm defender. Didn’t really stand out but in a good way because he didn’t do a lot wrong. Combine that style of defender with his electric recovery pace and it sounds like the type of defender who would be a great fit alongside Romero. I’m sure at 22 he isn’t likely to be the finished article for sure but I think we are in a place where growing with young talents is a good move for us.

Would also add, we are very quick at writing off players before they sign for us. Take a look at some of the beauts in this thread:

I’m going to say if Ange has already realized we need new centre backs in and has blessed this one then I’m going to trust that.

The comparisons to Fazio haha.

It's why I always take the forum scouts with a punch of salt. Go read the early pages Ndombele. Comments such as he will completely transform our midfield he is that good. He will make us title challengers again.

I think with VdV we have to trust the scouts have done the due diligence, his pace will suit the high line and that he is a good defender with a lot of potential.

One thing we can all agree on though, is 2 new CBs is a must.

I’m all for moaning but what exactly are these tears about?
We should be doing more in the transfer market, we should be backing the manager more but surely every fan with a brain in their head can see we are entering a season of massive transition? Surely no fan is entering the season expecting us to be challenging at the top, maybe not even challenging for 4th. This season separate from all the Levy bullshit is about Ange laying the foundations and coaching whatever squad he has in a completely new style and philosophy to hopefully really push on in 2024/25 season.
I’m sorry but if a fan is “crying” because maybe we don’t get CL football next season I find that very short sighted and a bit pathetic.
I'm sorry but fans aren't going to be quite as phlegmatic as you would like when the big boys are remorselessly hammering us at home, or we can't score against Luton away, or when Richarlson cops an injury and we've got no one up front to replace him. I get your point, but so far our board has shown very little appetite for the required rebuild and we're looking likely to be caught short in key positions. The crying fans have been crying for years now and don't trust the board to support the manager.

If he was a defender, with his attributes, who was already amazing, he probably wouldn't be 30-40 mil, so it is a punt, but if it makes you feel any better, I heard RB Leipzig were looking at him as the Gvardiol replacement, and their scouts are pretty renowned

This is actually gold. Particularly a very vocal current member insisting Toby would be played in midfield and nobody agreeing with him.

This is the thing that is frustrating me the most.

In a position where we have needed to improve for years we have three names - one is not a regular starter for Fulham and the other two were largely unknown before this transfer window....nothing wrong with that but surely there are other options out there we can look at?

Both VDV and Tapsoba seem to be like more long term options that will take time to settle and grow into the PL....I would've like a senior proven CB, known within the game for their quality who can come in and do a job straight away.
