If you are using Arsenal as a comparison then you should also recognise that it took them multiple seasons to put that defence together. Their best defender, Saliba, was brought in as a promising youngster and they invested years in him before he reached his current level.

They had multiple seasons with holding and others as backups.

We need to be realistic about where we are in our rebuild. I'd love it of we could bring in multiple quality centre backs, but that is a hope rather than an expectation. It's not realistic to expect to do it all in one window.

We are still early on in the rebuild. This is likely to take several windows. If we have to rely on Dier/Lenglet as a backup then that is a bit disappointing, but not the end of the world.

I hear you.. but it’s well known we needed a top CB last summer and we put it off in the hope of landing Bastoni/Gvardiol. So personally don’t think it’s unrealistic for us to land two top ones now when in reality we should have got one last summer too.
If both are available and we like both, we should do it now. Before they go on to have another big season and then waiting a further year means the transfer value increases even further or they want a bigger move to a Man City etc

Love the way people are ALREADY writing him off because he's cheaper even though they haven't watched either guy play and it's Ange's decision.

This is it. I can bet 99.9% of people on this forum hardly knew about him before we were linked. Now all of a sudden after watching a few YouTube compilations and reading twitter threads from apparent german football 'experts', they have deduced we are being 'cheap' by not going for the their preferred option.

It really doesn't matter what a load of idiot fans think. It's more about who Ange believes is best fit for his system, no matter what the price is.

Genuine pace (in CD! Something we’ve lacked for a long time)
Versatile
Not expensive
Young and with a significantly higher ceiling
AP wants him and happy to sign off

What’s not to like??

This is the the same Arsenal defence that conceded the same amount of Home league goals as us last season?
And more than Forest, West Ham and Palace at home.

Honestly are some of you imposters, the twerking for Arsenal needs to stop!!!
So we’re just going to decide to not count away goals conceded? 😂..

They had one of the best records in the league and we had one of the worst at the end of the day..

so you're discounting half of the games in a season

I don’t know if this is aimed at me as the post you quoted originally replied to mine.

However I was in no way writing him off, merely pointing out the fact that we have two clear top choices apparently. They both together aren’t exactly a mile off what we were willing to supposedly spend last summer on one CB.

So if we then bring in a guy like Tosin for 15 million I feel like we have stopped short.

It is the main area in our team that needed money spent after the GK. Why not push the boat out and get our first and second choice especially when Tapsoba is so flexible and can play both left and right CB.

I think most here would support who ever we end up with but we are allowed a preference without “writing them off”.

Yeah, i'd love that too. I don't completely disagree. I just don't think it's something we can expect at this stage of the rebuild.

We were in a very different place last season. I don't think that our plans then are that relevant to where we are now. We have a completely different manager, a different playing style and possibly a completely different budget.

We need to be prepared for the possibility of a few seasons out of the CL. I know the stadium should mean we can still spend relatively big, but we know that the board has a different risk appetite to us fans.

If Postecoglu would rather prioritise other positions, or take the time to properly evaluate our current defenders, then i'm happy to back him.

I think we're right at the start of this squad rebuild and will need to be patient. It's been promising so far, but if we expect too much too soon then we're just setting ourselves up for more disappointment.

Ignore Lyall ffs!

We do have an agreement in place with VdV and we know what it will take to get him. If we want to do it, we can make it happen very quickly!

Thanks mate as always. You’ve been epic with the info this window. Let’s hope we have this with tapsoba too

Ok buy your Arsenal shirts then, good luck next season boys 🙄

I hate arsenal, grew up and live in north london. But I'm not going to ignore the facts. They've built a decent team and are ambitious. We should take note as they shouldn't have caught us

I'd assume we are holding fire for a reason.

I'd guess it's trying to secure our no 1 target.

The weird thing in that is that YouTube scouting him he actually looks really good. Some aspects of his game look better than Tapsoba.
I think it’s all about the price on one vs the other, if it was reversed and Tapsoba was cheaper people would be moaning about us not getting VdV. Loads of things can affect what price a player costs not just his ability. I’d be happy with either one but I still do think we need both.

I think most folk aren’t debating who is better or writing off either player. More saying if they have been identified as our two top choices then why not push the boat out and sign both.

Especially as our CB area has been neglected for years.

I’ve seen a fair few comments here and there suggesting we’re going for the cheaper option. But yeah I think there’s no reason why we can’t and shouldn’t get both.

I thought VDV had the flashier of the two sets of highlights. He looks like a man playing in a kid's league. Super strong and fast as fuck.

I wouldn't be disappointed with either. VDV also looks to have versatility to fill in at left back like Super Jan.

Whether it’s this lad or Tapsoba I hope the club make their decision by the end of the week and pull the trigger next week before we head on tour. Vital to get at least one new centre half in for pre-season. Can’t be going into the new season with Dier or Sanchez starting games because we moved to slowly recruiting new defenders.
