Whether it’s this lad or Tapsoba I hope the club make their decision by the end of the week and pull the trigger next week before we head on tour. Vital to get at least one new centre half in for pre-season. Can’t be going into the new season with Dier or Sanchez starting games because we moved to slowly recruiting new defenders.
Would be absolute jokes if they did  They would truly be trolling us

Agree.

Also Arsenal have signed Rice for £105m, Havertz for £75m and are looking at Cancelo for £60m, I know they have CL footy but we have our new stadium up and running now so let’s make some solid moves, VDV & Tapsoba should be coming in minimum to strengthen the defence.

Our transfer strategy shouldn’t be determined or defined by what Arsenal do or don’t do in the transfer market. People need to be a little less obsessed with what they’re doing.

I agree.
For what it's worth, after developing a strong young team to challenge for titles in the same way Poch did for us I happen to think they are making the same mistakes we made by bringing in very expensive "stars" who won't actually add anything they don't already have.
Havertz a forward that doesn't score much and 100million Rice for a player that can tackle but isn't very creative and doesn't score many goals.

We need to focus on our squad and creating a variety of options that we use appropriately

Assuming we VDV is bought as back up to Tapsoba in the left I just don’t think it is realistic to keep such a high quality player happy to sit on the bench. Centreback is one of the least rotated positions in the team as developing a partnership is key to a solid defence. And with no European football there will be less opportunities available to rotate.

If we had CL I would say it would make sense - as you naturally need a deeper squad - and would easier to keep 3 high level centre backs happy. But at our current stage in the rebuild having one quality CB to play alongside Romero, and then an able back up - Lenglet or Tosin - should be fine to next summer. For perspective, Arsenal’s main back up is Rob Holding, and I couldn’t even tell you who Newcastle’s is, and they easily both made top 4 - with Newcastle having one of the best defences in the league.

Yes and when we get back in Europe/champions league next season we let Dier see out his contract and we sign another quality young centre back. Meaning we’ll have four options and plenty of matches to rotate them in.

Yes, fans are obsessed with Arsenal because they are Arsenal but they are also the club that are a barometer of what we should be spending based on revenues, success in recent seasons etc.

It’s also been suggested that VDV has been quite capable as an LB for Wolfsburg and we could see him as a backup option there as well, which would open up a lot more potential minutes. Not sure if that’s realistic or pure wishful thinking.

I don’t think it should be ‘defined’ by what they’re doing but seeing as they’re a rival and a direct competitor without oil money and in a similar situation to us with a new stadium but build 10+ years before ours the fact that they’ve already spent £175mil and are looking at £60 for Cancelo ao £235mil+

We’ve spent £17mil on Vicario and £40mil on Maddison, so £30mil and £40mil on VDV & Tapspba would bring our spend to still under £150mil so I’m saying money shouldn’t be an issue as to if/why we don’t sign these 2 CB’s / 2 CB’s in general.

Defence was our biggest issue last season, we let in 65+ goals!

If we are building for now and the future then we absolutely need 3 quality CB’s, it’s really that simple.

Also Arsenal’s back-up is actually £50mil Ben White not Holding but they were playing him RB last season.

Newcastle have Botman, Schar, Lacelles and Burn who can all play CB and will likely add to that this summer.

Liverpool have VVD, Matip, Gomez, Konate

Man.U have Varane, Martinez, Lindelof, Shaw, Bailey and Maguire!!

3 top CB’s is the minimum we should have.

But they're not really in a similar situation to us. They are at a completely different point of their rebuild, with different aims, a different squad, and a different owner/risk appetite.

If you are set on comparing us, then it would be more relevant to look at Arteta's first summer window, where they only spent about £70m.

The main lesson to learn from Arsenal is that a proper rebuild will take multiple seasons and that we need to be patient with the process. You can't buy all the players you need in one window.

Listening to Lyall Thomas interview on Last Word on Spurs and he said he does not think VdV is particularly close and he thinks Spurs are negotiating for 5 CBs then making the choice (nothing groundbreaking) but mentioned the 5 are VdV, Tapsoba, Lenglet, Tosin, and he THINKS Guehi but hes not 100% certain on him
Not sure why everyone is jumping on this post, he’s just put it out there. Not everyone is sad enough to know the ins and outs of every journalist.

Massively disappointing if we only sign one top class centre back however I won’t be surprised. It’s a typical Levy policy to leave us one or two short every window.

I think signing van de ven, tosin, and possibly Lenglet would be a great start to the build.

I didn't expect everything to be done in one window and would expect ange to give someone a chance from the current squad as well.

I think we reassess in 6-12 months and will remain positive if we were to get vdV and tosin

This mindset is exactly why the quality of the squad is deteriorating year by year

Just not true though is it? We did none of that. They at least are going for prem proven targets who arteta has identified to play in a certain way. They’re doing exactly what we should have done under poch but levy failed him.

Ignore Lyall ffs!

We do have an agreement in place with VdV and we know what it will take to get him. If we want to do it, we can make it happen very quickly!

Sounds very much like one or the other of VdV or Tapsoba then, otherwise why hang about on this deal. Was hoping for both.
