Ornstein loves reporting us in a worse light. When does he ever report the full fee in one go like that? Anyone else he’d report the guaranteed fee plus the add ons in two figures. Does my head in. Subtle stuff but I’m convinced it’s because he’s a massive gooner.
Paranoia mate. You could easily spin it the other way... we're spending big money because we're a massive club.

I hope people have patience. We're signing very high potential here but he will have slip ups in his first season, especially in a high line surrounded by a young GK, young LB, sometimes rash partner and covered by only one DM. Look at the player Kyle Walker became, and look at some of the mistakes he made early in his career.
Tottenham Away you tube channel did an analysis and reckon he is a good footballer (fast, technically strong on the ball, attacking)but he is not a well developed or natural defender and will still need to be coached a lot in centre back craft. More of a mid who is tall so plays at the back. His aerial stats, tackles and intercepts around the final third, clearance stats are very poor, so a bit of a gamble for quite big dollars. Has potential to learn and evolve but no way yet a Vertonghen. Not sure if people agree with the channel but you can watch it if you want.

In fairness, I do think the initial stories in July had this in the 30M euros area, so 40M euros fixed fee and another 10 in add ons is a pretty fair bump over that. But so be it. This is who Ange wants and huge potential for the future. Can’t say the club weren’t willing to spend the money to get their man here.

we do have to be patient. This is more for him to be a top EPL CB in 25 or 26 vs 23 or 24. But very exciting skill set and raw materials.

We definitely need another CB who is more of a plug and play.

Seen a few compare to Vertonghen.

11 years ago Vertonghen cost us 12m and was experienced.

Just goes to show the mass inflation we have had over the last few years.

that’s fair but as we need 2 CB’s maybe the other 1 is a little bit more ready if less high potential.

with this signing and the Veliz signing (+ the earlier signings!), it is starting to feel more new era time. I hope to help this we are able to offload Lloris and Sanchez and others but at least our new defence takes shape.

That's why I reckon we probably go for Tosin. PL proven, aerially dominant, homegrown, affordable, good on the ball.

Not a top tier defender but a solid backup/rotation for VdV if he's struggling a bit or we need more of an aerially dominant CB against more physical teams.

Struggle to see us signing Tapsoba too despite some whispers that we might sign both him and VdV.

RE the posts about being patient… we need a CB that’s ready to go, why should we be patient if it’s been clear as day for 2 years we need a reliable CB.

Unless it means we can't strengthen elsewhere where we need to (other CB) I couldn't care less if we have overpaid. We really could do with him playing against Barcelona and thus have him ready to start at Brentford. We need fast players at the back who's names aren't Sanchez or Tanganga sharpish.

We've spent £100m net with this one which is the minimum required every season imo, so hopefully we can make another £40-50m selling PEH, Sanchez, Tanguy, Reggie and a few quid from the deadwood and spunk it on another CB late in the window.

Will people stop posting 50m without indicating currency? It’s getting in my tits. Thanks.

Can people stop quoting "50m" unless they're going to prefix it with the correct currency of Euros!! Its £34.5m rising to potential £43m OR €40m rising to €50m.
I couldn't agree more. People see a number and dont see the currency. Its absolutely annoying and then they have meltdowns about fees. When the issue is actually their own eyes and not reading properly.

I know what you mean, but there aren't exactly a wealth of absolutely top class, PL proven, ready to go left sided CBs and pretty much all of the other options, including Tapsoba, are punts to some degree (or just ain't coming to Spurs).

Given we can't match the money clubs on fees or salaries I can kinda see the logic on punting big on a player who, if he improves, could be an absolute monster in a few years time. Think we need to play the long game with this project as I doubt we're going to be challenging for much next season.

I get where you’re coming from but tbh I just don’t buy that anymore. Our recruitment is just nowhere near good enough, the players are out there.

Nice, reasonable voice. Our recruitment has been quite good in the last couple of seasons. It's selling our deadwood that's been the problem.

Shoulda bought Kim Min Jae 3 years ago innit.

Think we've gotta trust the scouting department on this one. It's high risk/high reward. Fingers crossed we've got it right.

I agree, but that is only obvious in hindsight. Kim was pretty inexperienced 3 years ago and I did like the look of him. We are where we are and hopefully we have picked correctly this time.

VDV is an Ange pick, tried to sign him for Celtic.
Levy backing the manager on this one.

Yeah was always a bit of a toss-up and we backed the wrong horse in Rodon. If we'd gone for Kvara and Kim instead of Rodon and Gil we'd be in a very different place right now.

Hopefully this means we've got a CB on the way out. Sanchez is the only one I've seen links with.
