I do remember there been talk of Emerson not being keen on the move to Spurs initially and that it took some convincing from our Brazilian contingent (which might have just been Lucas at the time) to get him onboard with the move. If we don't have a loan deal already lined up that he's happy with then of course the risk becomes that we have 3 RWBs for the second half of the season and Emersons value falls off a cliff as he'll get no game time.

This is however the reality of operating without a proper transfer strategy and by going with slightly risky, but might pay off, signings. Because when you do that a % of them just won't work out. What Spurs fail to realise is that if you go with riskier signings and you don't loan them first to test them out (and sometimes even if you do - Lo Celso), then you will end up winning on some (Kulusevski) and losing on others (Emerson). What you have to do is cut your loses on the ones that don't work out.

So we paid, in this example, about £65m for Kulu and Emerson. Kulu is now worth about £50-60m and Emerson is now worth about £10-15m. So you've ended up with about £60-75m worth of players for £65m. However if you had just bought 1 player at £65m then they might have worked out or might not. So this method reduced the risk overall of your transfer spend. However it does require to you cut your loses on those that don't work out. I think Levy simply doesn't understand that part - we should cut our loses now on Emerson, as there will be takers for £10m-15m (even if it's loan to buy) and then sign Porro. But I imagine we are trying to negotiate both a lower fee for Porro and a higher fee for Emerson all at the same time.
Emerson only worth… what someone is willing to pay. Not convinced he’s worth £10-15m tbh at the moment.

We should be able to shift Emerson on loan if not permanently - he’s being booed on a Weekly basis. If a chance for a change of scenery comes up, I’d fancy he takes it. His contract should not be too expensive, unless we truly sh*t the bed when we signed him. If we want him gone permanently, Levy will have to take a hit on the fee. But we should bite the bullet and move on.

Regarding Porro, I see some concerns regarding his offensive effectiveness (lots of misplaced passes). There will always be question marks around young players, especially coming from lesser leagues. Many had the same concerns when we were looking at Bruno Fernandes.

I think it is also worth considering the knock on effect signing Porro would do with regards to Royals (or others) exit.
Any club seeing we have 4 players for 1 position basically know they have you over a barrel and can offer derisory amounts. Now we may well accept less, but how low would we accept?

But most clubs in the EPL will already know we really need to upgrade at RWB - and the fact that Porro is all over the news - they’ve probably got us over a barrel anyway. I wouldn’t meet spurs asking price for Doc, Emerson right now and I’m just a lowly fan skulking around on the web

Not only that. There is the human side of what it will do to the squad dynamic if we all of sudden start freezing players out the squad. Players that will have friends within the squad that will empathise that Royal (or others) are being treated unfairly.

Absolutely. I might be wrong but Royal and Doc seem well liked within the squad

I know I'm probably going to sound like a broken record here but it's just not that simple. they don't have to go on loan and will only go if they think it's in their best interests, and to a club and country that they'd like to go to. On top of that the club has to see some benefit in it financially or from a growth perspective and these all need to align. It's frustrating for all of us that we are in this position window after window due to poor transfer strategy in the past, but we are, and we are going to have to lump it in the short term at least.
We need to find ourselves an Everton. Everytime Man utd (under fergie) wanted to ship a player...everton! Darren Gibson, Tim Howard, Phil Neville - i'm sure there are more!
Then UTD went downhill and Everton decided to align themselves with Arsenal. Iwobi, Walcott etc.

It's a shame Sunderland decided to become rubbish. Imagine doing a package deal again with GLC, Royal etc.

We need to find an everton to take our off-casts no questions asked. this is where Fabio P should be spending his time....buttering up everton!

oh hang on i forgot we sent them Dele. Maybe a different club then.

Let's see if Conte is happy to lump it.

I’d like to think there are a few PL or teams in Europe that take Emerson or Djed on loan. Probably more a question of terms and what the player wants.

I can’t see Doherty being a bigger priority to shift than the other two. Seems Conte prefers him at RWB and he can (in a pinch) play LWB. Plus, (not that this should count for much), he’s great friends with Harry, right? Pretty sure that is a factor, albeit small, for Doc being the least likely to leave.

If better players are available to bring in, the consequence is the existing lesser players will have to slip down the pecking order. Porro will massively improve our RWB position and so one or two of the others will have to make room.

Yes, there is a balance to not be too brutal with current players who may be popular in the dressing room, however if the key objective is to improve the first team to be more competitive for top honours then the ambitious quality players in the squad will respect that part of the dynamic.

Management shouldn't prioritise building the squad solely on who is popular in the dressing room. I'll never forget in All or Nothing when Sacramento told Mourinho that from speaking to the players "they say Sissoko has a great influence in the changing room". Mourinho's response was to roll back his chair, looking completely stunned before saying "Fuck!"

Of course. My point is it’s just not good practice to overload massively one position - both financially and for the dynamic. We need to get a RWB put the club before we bring Porro in. That’s the bottom line.

Ali Gold posted one of his hour long chats just now and an interesting tidbit was:

"I've been speaking with loads of agents this week and some think Porro is a smokescreen for another target, while other agents think Porro is indeed the top target"

Edit: Here is the link to the video and the Porro bit come around 24:30

This is also why conte keeps banging on about “it’s so important for tottenham to not make mistakes in the transfer market” and so far he and Paratici are doing a Sterling job at the rebuild it’s just taking time because we have a finite budget and it’s hard to move some of the deadwood/‘mistakes’ on.

Porro I think would be another fantastic signing to play conteball ?

Tottenham told to meet Pedro Porro’s €45m release clause by Sporting

Sporting Lisbon are maintaining that Pedro Porro will only be allowed to leave the Portuguese side if a club pays his €45million (£39.9m) release clause.

Tottenham Hotspur are keen and pushing to sign Porro, 23, this month but are not willing to meet Sporting’s asking price.

Fellow Premier League side Chelsea are also admirers of the right-sided player but their interest is less advanced.

Barcelona have shown interest too but their financial difficulties are well-documented. The Catalan club signed Hector Bellerin on a free transfer in the summer to plug that gap in their squad.

Sporting and Porro’s representatives will meet next week to discuss his future. Though he has never played for them, Manchester City have a 30 per cent sell-on clause. City, though are not involved in any talks.

Sporting head coach Ruben Amorim has previously stated that Porro, and along with former Spurs man Marcus Edwards, will “only leave for the clause”.

Porro was officially a City player from 2019 until last summer, when he joined Sporting permanently. At City, Porro spent one season on loan at Real Vallodolid before two campaigns at Sporting.

When Sporting took up their option to buy Porro at the end of last season, he signed a three-year contract until the summer of 2025.

Porro’s performances for Sporting saw him earn one senior Spain cap under Luis Enrique in March 2021, which came in a World Cup qualifier against Georgia.

This season, Porro has been a constant fixture in Amorim’s Sporting side, making 22 appearances in all competitions. In that period, he has scored twice and registered 10 assists.
