We should let the DOF set the style and desired formation in an ideal world, and find coaches who will work with that system. Won’t happen though.
In theory yes but not if it leads to managers like Gattuso.

I do think that in an attacking, high press system Porro and Udogie could def work in a 433 say.

We will not improve with this guy in the team, it'll make no difference to how shit and ponderous we are in attack. There's so much wrong with the tactics...

Controversial take: we should really think carefully about buying Porro - he seems to very much be a RWB specialist and it doesn’t seem wise to bank on us playing a back 3 in the long term.

Yea if we are buying him then we have to be ALL IN on conte and find our next manager who can play with a back 3 but ideally play some possession football otherwise we’ll have the same issue in reverse with porro that we have with Emerson if we end up asking porro to play RB in a back 4 in the future he won’t be able to do it

I agree but we also have Udogie already on the way who seems like a LWB specialist.

Honestly, I wouldn't bother now. Conte is going to be gone and then we will be left with a player who the next manager, who won't be playing wing backs, won't want because the player isn't a fullback or a winger. I'd rather give Spence the games to see if he can do it.

If Conte does indeed walk, I agree with you 100%. This isn’t based on Spence though, but it makes more financial sense that if we are getting a new manager those funds need to go towards them. Spence still has to prove himself IMO.

If Conte isn’t leaving, we need to sign Porro asap. Kulu becomes 1000 times more dangerous with a proper wingback to support him. Would allow him to free roam and create.

Id still bring him in and play him as an aggressive RB. Even if we did bring in a new manager we still need an upgrade there imo

There's also different ways to play the full backs. City (and Scum with Arteta being a student of Pep) FBs push up into midfield with their wing forwards staying high and wide. Pools bomb forward with their wing forwards coming more central.

The starting lineup isn't really important, it's where the players are are instructed to do most of their work in possession. Of course some fine tuning when out of possession but I don't think it's as big a deal as some.

This is also because the full backs in those teams have a defence and midfield they can trust to hold and\or progress the ball.

I agree. Fullbacks with high levels of stamina should be able to operate as part of a back four or in advance of a three. Obviously a lot of that depends on their individual attributes as well as, perhaps even more importantly, the players they line up alongside.

For instance, having a CDM that can comfortably drop in to the backline provides some protection when one of the full backs goes on the overlap, say.
