Yeah exactly this. People go so over the top with praise. Some many attacks came down his side because there was huge space first half.
But people go over the top with criticism. Terrible? Try these synonyms:

They need to get this guy out on the training pitch and drill, drill, drill him defensively.

Going forward he is excellent and it’s frustrating that his weakness is the easiest part of being a fall back. Awareness, composure, anticipation, staying on your feet.

There’s no way he’s being told that when we are defending in our own box. Plus there were times he was stood on rashford in the box when he had both cbs already on him leaving shaw or garnacho just completely open
He has been told to play more centrally, it may be that he needs to get the ballance right but then none of the team has got their roles down to perfection yet, it will take time before we are running smoothly at our best.

Compare this defensive performance against last season and it's clear that he's been working hard to improve that side of his game. Still has work to do but I feel much more confident that he's improving and in time will be less of a liability defensively.

Should be a option to take Kuluseski place . Could see him playing in front of Royal especially in away games .

decent pace , good shot on him and can deliver a decent ball .

He played a few great passes yesterday and got forward very well creating space for Kulu.

Defended well one on one as well, needs to work on receiving the ball and dealing with situations under the press.

He will take the RB slot I feel.

He'll have tougher games, but has the ingredients to make a good RB. And there's no doubt about the quality of his right foot.

I was worried for a bit given the move away from wing backs, but early signs are that he can convert to a RB. Which is ace

Great reel. But is weird it's not edited chronologicallly.

He started the match with some mistakes and I was thinking, oh gosh, he will be roasted. But well credit to him, he grew into the game and really played well for the rest of the match.

Like Vicario, I like the mentality of these lads now. They never let some setbacks drown them. Not sure why, but I keep kinda think Jedinak as our assistant coach has a significant influence to how much tougher we are now in mentality, he's the guy I remembered when seeing him play he took no nonsense and also a leader, then with Big Ange the overall commander to who everyone looks up to and respect.

Great to have a blend of options at RB. Both have differing strengths that can be utilised dependent on how Ange wants to set the team up. Competition is healthy.

I also think Royal is capable of playing CB. Encouraging performance from Porro. He will definitely contribute 10+ G/A

Differing strengths but none of them actually defending

Royal can certainly defend and Porro defended very well on Saturday despite some deficiencies being evident in pre-season.
Come on they are both weak defensively.

We wouldn’t have bought Porro if Royale was good enough and Porro has shown lots of lapses of concentration and poor decision making at the back.

It feels like our scouting has been limited to watching highlight video’s on Youtube until recently.

I think Royal is a decent defender. Got done by Rico Henry the other week but generally speaking he's decent 1v1 and isn't bad at defending in the box and reading danger.

Despite some very sloppy giveaways, when it came to defending Porro did better than I expected vs United, although I think against a team like United with very little physical presence in the box he wasn't as exposed. I still really worry about his lack of ability to sense dangers and track runners in the box and he didn't have to do much of that vs United.

Hope he continues to work on his defensive game and proves me wrong as if he can make it work as a RB then he's a hell of a weapon to have going forward.

We bought Porro because Royal was not good enough going forward in a RWB position in Contes’s system.

Royal is certainly open to criticism for certain aspects of his game, but defending is not an area I would say he is poor in and is actually one of his strengths. He is tall, athletic, excellent work rate and does very well defending with 4 in the back. There are probably only 2-3 RB’s in this league that I would consider better defenders than Royal.

When playing inverted full backs, sometimes it will be the CBs responsibility to slide out wide to cover the winger while the FB recovers back in the CBs position. We are still new to the system so I think those reactions are not automatic yet. Looked like Ange had both full backs play a little wider in the 2nd half which help nullify MU's wide play.

Yeah Neville was banging on about him losing the ball with his back to goal constantly (it happened twice) and said he should never play there again and the experiment should be scrapped.

Later on After Christian Eriksen lost the ball in a similar position he went on to say how he did the same last season (so twice)
Yet he didn't mention how the Christian Eriksen experiment had failed and that he should never play in midfield again...

He was on top Twatty form, also making bizarre comments about Vicario overplaying saves and swinging his legs about. 🤷‍♂️

I’m taking into account everytime he’s played for us not just his last game.
