The Kane example doesn't work. Kane was never touted as a wonder kid. The point with Sessegnon is that he was and the supporting evidence is lacking. If you look at the attributes needed to be an elite attacking wide player, they aren't evident in Sessegnon's game. Hence the video's of him producing mind blowing skills, don't exist, in the way they do for Sancho or Hazard etc. It's simply not random which players go on to be world beaters and which don't. They have to have the attributes to support the "potential" claims. You simply won't find the videos of Sessegnon hitting screamers from distance, curling the ball with the outside of his foot through a gap or turning several players inside out, or showing insane acceleration etc. Someone compared his situation now with Gnabry and I showed, the key difference.

I'm not saying he won't go on to be a top LB. I've said he's got the tools and I want him to go out on loan and develop. But watching Gnabry dominate in the CL semi final and think Sessegnon can go the same way is extremely far fetched, as Gnabry had all the tools needed to be an elite attacking player and Sess simply doesn't. Now Marcus Edwards, on the other hand, clearly does have the ability, so he would be a more apt comparison with Gnabry. Edwards couldn't get a game with Norwich, yet it's not implausible to imagine him dominating a CL semi final is a few years, if he can physically develop, which doesn't seem that likely.

Got to remember Sessegnon is only 20 years old. We haven't had a propper look at him yet. Being injured for pre-season and the change of clubs and managers hasn't made it easy. I'd back him to become a solid player for us. Has a great engine, can pass and finish just needs time. Got to remember he scored at Bayern.

I agree with all of that. I've said several times that he has all the tools to become a top LB. I'm just saying he has never shown the elite level talent needed to make at the highest level as an attacking player. And comparisons with players like Gnabry don't mean much, as the attributes that Gnabry has, that made him shine last night, were always there and it was just a question of whether he could develop to use those attributes effectively in senior football. Marcus Edwards clearly has the technical ability and skills to be an, elite level, attacking player and it's a question of if he can develop to be effective in a top league. With Sessegnon, he has to find a role, which LB seems most likely, as you can't realistically be expected to become an elite level, attacking player, with his skill set. The reality is, if you don't have either insane acceleration, the ability to score from anywhere or dribble your way through, you aren't becoming a top attacking wide player.

The majority aren't saying Sessegnon will be an elite level attacking player, just that at 20 it is far too early to write him off. He will never be a Sancho or an Edwards but neither is Perisic and he has had a great career by working hard and regularly contributing with goals and assists wherever he has been. Wide players do not always have to be spectacular, functional can be just as good for the benefit of the team.

Danny Rose and Ashley Cole were not elite level left backs at 20 and I would be happy if Sessegnon ended up as good as either of those.

He has achieved way more in men's football than most players his age so not sure what he has to do to prove himself other than be given a chance to show what he can do.

He is being judged on an injury hit season, making sporadic appearances in a team devoid of confidence or structure.

Only time will tell but I think he will become a very good left back within the next 18 months.

I think some are overlooking his positives.

He's actually very good at making intelligent runs in and around the box, can pick the right pass in the final third, and has the knack of turning up at the right time to score goals.

Go back and check his 17/18 season goals and assists reel. Remember this kid was what, 17 back then. In a league where the refs are alot more lenient regarding what's considered a 'fair tackle'. It can be brutal.

I see more than enough there for Mourinho to work with.

Of course, we don't get to witness him training, nor know him to judge his character.

But I for one will not be knocking the lad before he's even had a fair crack at Spurs, certainly considering he's only 20 years old.

One of the best prospects we have. cannot wait to see him develop. We have a serious player on our hands here. Needs to learn the position he wants to play and get game time but really cannot wait.

That's the thing he is a weird one.

He got this young wonderkid status thing, even though as an attacking player he doesn't look like a wonderkid. he is not got that flair or dribbling ability that you associate with young talents that break through at his age.

The reality is what you have is a very clever efficient player, who plays like someone much older than he is. At Fulham, as an attacking player you could see he had technical ability and made clever runs and also was incisive in his passing. He never appeared electrifying though.

The problem is in the PL, you get players who can be efficient and more dynamic and there are other issues around here as well. I don't think playing in an offensive out wide position is his future. As fullback I do remember a bit, strong running game and all that, this is a possibility though he needs to be more aggressive. I've thought he could also do a job in the hole. He is a very intelligent player when I've watched him, could be interesting..

He is a kid and he is one of the finest English 20 year olds in the game. His issue is that he almost broke through to early, and this where a lot of the criticism comes. For championship he was a standout. But this league is a bit different. It will take time.

Some people seem to say that last season was a complete write off. But, I think people forget, he came in with a huge injury and no preseason, then he has to settle in to the squad and then adapt to trying out new (old) positions, like fullback. He still appearances despite this, I don't really know what people expected.

I for sure expected more or less this from his first season. He's really a youth player on the fringes of the squad, and development wise that s kind of where he is. Next season we will learn a lot more, but even then it would be too early to write off.

Although I imagine some people on here are writing them off, they are probably pissed that we spent 35m on 'future prosects' when perhaps that money could have been used for say a back up striker or a DM that are ready to play now.

I rate sessegnon, I think he has a future (for me at lb) but 25 mill is alot of money and why would we continue to buy these players when poch proved that he didn't want to blood our own youngsters. Jose as well has not given too many minutes to Skipp for example, when Sissoko was quite clearly utter rubbish.

I liked the spurs strategy when we were paying small amounts and we were willing to give them a taste of the first team.

Neither of which seems to be the case now (sadly)
I do agree with what you say.
It was a different time then though and we were on the verge of competing with the big boys, through our shiny new stadium bringing the cash rolling in.
Then, £25m for a promising player didn't look half as bad as it does in today's climate.

If he goes anywhere it won't be to be back up anywhere (Milan) and prob not to a standard less than the PL as he's already had that at Championship level.

I haven't read it yet but I'm pretty sure that same Athletic article says we're not letting him go.

It does indeed. In fact, here is the headline for the article “Mourinho ready to give Sessegnon chance to progress from curious first year”.

Final couple paragraphs which offer a summation.

With a few weeks before the new season starts, and another month after that until the transfer window closes, there is still time for Sessegnon’s situation to change.

For the moment, with pre-season training getting under way and Spurs facing a jam-packed fixture schedule in September, he will get his chance. A loan move could make sense, but it would be a big gamble for the player, who might then find it tough to work his way back into the manager’s plans. From the club’s point of view, Sessegnon’s value would depreciate unless a loan move was a big success.
In any case, plan A is for Sessegnon to kick on this season at Tottenham and ensure that his two-year anniversary in August 2021 is met with more than a collective shrug of the shoulders.

He’s an attacker, not a defender. He needs to demand the bell more if you ask me.

I like Ryan, young, homegrown and hungry.
Future England international. There’s a reason we beat united and now barce are reportedly interested.
He’s young, give the guy a chance. I can see a very good player there. It’s now up to us as a club to develop him and us as fans to support him, this will give him much needed confidence at his age. We always moan about missing out on these up and coming youngsters but now we have one, let’s look after him I say

You see clips of him at Fulham and he was at it , direct , skillful and aggressive with the ball . I haven’t seen anything of that with Spurs. Maybe last year just knocked his confidence?
. 5 minutes in To the friendly last week I thought here he is .... then he just disappeared and was on the periphery for the rest of the game . Cirkin was a different matter when he came on .
Hope Ryan kicks on. , come on lad !
