I'm coming around to the fact that this lad is, quite possibly, the best bit of business we've done in some time, with regards to bringing in a player who slots straight into the first team so well. Very solid player, and Verts looks a million times more confident next to him - very impressive player all round.

So @Mullers, are you coming around yet? I imagine this is one of those times where you're glad to be proved wrong, or at least the signs are very good at the moment that Alderweireld is the real deal.
Yeah I'm coming around and the signs are good, I hope he does prove me wrong. He has the right attitude, I also know it take very little to become a villain.E.g Harry Kane.

I noticed when I saw the highlights from the Bournemouth game, that he went to the goal line to cover when Ritchie was about to shoot. He did the same just before half time, and saved a certain goal. It's great to have a defender who reacts instinctively like that when he's not directly involved in the action.

Greatly impressed with him. Distribution good but is a a real defender. Our defence has improved so much and the only real changes in my opinion is settling on a first choice centre back pairing and having a more defensive minded midfielder.

Great signing and hopefully with us for a long time.

The guy is a class act. Him and Jan together is purely sexual.

Ive got a Man Utd supporting "friend" in work who is trying to convince everyone that will listen that Chris Smalling is world class and that his partnership with Phil Jones is the best in the premier league. Why are Man Utd fans such fucking idiots?

Love him having a go at Jan Sunday, settling into being a senior figure in the team no doubt.

Smalling has been incredible since January. As in genuinely best in the league. Strange talking about his partnership with Jones as Blind has played beside him most often this season.

He has been absolutely superb and we finally have a really strong and dependable pair of centre backs - it's been a while.

However this signing works out, I still think it was wrong to promise him first team football and that he would form a partnership with verts before he even signed. That does not send out a good message.

Nothing wrong with that if the proviso is....if you're performing well enough.

Where did you read this? I am of the firm belief that we would never guarantee a payer first team and any talk to the contrary is bullshit click bait. We will never know the contents of a contract, but that's one rare clause anywhere in the Premier League, imo/

@Bus-Conductor - I believe you were against this signing - have you changed your mind on Alderweireld?

This is what I actually said:

Alderweireld seemed like a decent enough player whenever I've seen him but we do have to qualify last season's games with the fact that Southampton were ultra conservative, and defended well as a team, my biggest concern, and it was my concern when we were first linked, is the negative impact it's going to have on the development of Dier. As a CB, I thought Dier showed some really good qualities (footballing and leadership), especially considering his age and the fact it was his first season in the EPL.

I think he's been a resounding success so far and just about a perfect balance for Vertonghen. I can't think of a Cb pairing in the EPL I'd swap for these two right now. I still lament a little what it means to the short/medium term CB career of Dier. But judged on it's own merits and the impact on our first team, it's been a very good signing, so far.

I read it on the front page here and replied there too , so far my searches have not revealed the thread but I think the original source was the sunday times.

"The 26 year old has been told he will be a first choice in Tottenham's back four..." - it's media wording, of course they'll tell him he'll be first choice, conveniently ignoring the already well established Vertonghen and the three other defenders we told that to. There's no way it's in his contract though, no way on earth.

I don't give a shit if we told Toby he would be first-choice. It's possible that if we didn't he would be at Southampton, and we'd be shipping more goals every game.
