Guess I'm in the minority, but I just don't care for him. Perfectly average, and someone we'd be trying to move on in 2 years if we got him.

I'd even rather have Fazio, that's how meh I feel about this guy.

Concerning that this post got so many agrees :ROFLMAO:

Where did you read this? I am of the firm belief that we would never guarantee a payer first team and any talk to the contrary is bullshit click bait. We will never know the contents of a contract, but that's one rare clause anywhere in the Premier League, imo/
It would never be in a contract, but it would be part of the recruitment.

I imagine Poch told him he would be first choice to start the season, but I imagine everyone knows that after that, performances dictates spots on the pitch. A player like Alderweireld would want some assurances he would be first choice before he went to another team - he could have stayed 2nd choice at Atletico.

I was skeptical to buying Toby, not because I doubted his qualities but simply because I thought he'd "steal" the CB spot of Dier. Of course that did actually happen one may say - but, as we all know, Dier is just fine as DM.
Getting Toby has proven to be a master stroke as he seem to have made every defender around him better. Even Walker does fewer mistakes now a days.
Strange as it sound, but I doubt there is any CB paring in the EPL I would like have over Jan & Toby.

Nothing wrong with that if the proviso is....if you're performing well enough.
He performed well at southampton but I don't think that should mean that he's fast tracked into the first team
"The 26 year old has been told he will be a first choice in Tottenham's back four..." - it's media wording, of course they'll tell him he'll be first choice, conveniently ignoring the already well established Vertonghen and the three other defenders we told that to. There's no way it's in his contract though, no way on earth.
I never said that it was part of his contract, I just said it was wrong to promise him first team football, we shouldn't promise anyone who are we are looking to sign first team football. They need to come here and prove they are a worth a regular team place. If they don't want to come here because they are not guaranteed first team football, fuck em, move on to a next target and let them elsewhere.
I don't give a shit if we told Toby he would be first-choice. It's possible that if we didn't he would be at Southampton, and we'd be shipping more goals every game.
You don't have confidence in a defensive pairing of Verts and Dier? The improvement in defence is not down to one man.

If we're putting it down to personnel, then the main two changes responsible for our improvement are Dier at DM and Toby. We played with Dier and Jan last season and defended poorly on many occasions, so I would be less confident. I'm not saying that Dier is a bad CB though.

I think with a DM, Jan and Dier would do better too. TA suggested that he benefited from having Schneiderlin and Victor Wanyama, in front of him.

I think he was indirectly telling the pairing in midfield to do a better job.
Another thing which I think is important in our run is him playing with verts, they are friends, they have a good chemistry. It was one of the reasons why he wanted to come to us, I'd like to see how he is under pressure not playing with Verts.

Superb player, which I'd completely under-appreciated.

He's also upped Jan's game again (a bit like Fazio did, when he first joined), but these guys seem like a proper pairing - something we've lacked for a long time. A proper foundation.

Just need to get our full backs fully match fit and sharp now, with Dier becoming ever more commanding game on game in front of them and Lloris behind! Great base to work from.

IMO Jan needs to be led, Toby like Faz and Daws do just that, which brings out the best in him.

But lead by a man who can lead/demand respect through action. And in this regard Toby seem to the right man for Jan. Did Poch, through talks with Jan and/or Toby find this out or it just happened by "chanced"? I prefer an "ITK-reply"

just LOLLL!!!!!

Toby and Jan have been top top drawer this season. We usually ship4/5 vs Man.City, this time we conceded 1 and we've kept 3 clean sheets in last 4. Toby has been a HUGE reason for that, very solid top drawer player and clever signing as he works very well with Jan!

Bet those 2 are loving their football at the moment.

@yankspurs those words above... have them for dinner tonight fella, eat em right up :ROFLMAO:
:ROFLMAO:
Gone a bit quiet mate lucky Toby is finally looking crap...oh wait nope still a worldy signing!!! #couldn't be more wrong LOL

Toby has been an excellent buy and Verts is playing like he did in his first season with us. That obviously has helped us this season but personally I think the main reason the defence is better and tougher to break down is because of Dier and the cover he gives. Having those 3 in those positions might just make us successful again. Long may this all continue.

Ps - I wouldn't be completely averse to swapping Dier & Verts around for a game or 2 just to see how that pans out.
