As far as I remember Saints had a deal where Alderweireld would become a Saints player at the end of his loan spell.. Spurs's interest was there but the Saints deal was binding

Apparently someone at Saints screwed up the paperwork and their deal to sign him after the loan expired, we stepped in and ta-da! Best CB pairing since King and Woody imho

others will know more than me on this - not itk just a regular on here

I always thought they had a deal to make the loan permanent but it's still down to the player wether he wants to move and he wanted to move to Spurs so obviously can't be forced to sign for saints

Superb player, which I'd completely under-appreciated.

He's also upped Jan's game again (a bit like Fazio did, when he first joined), but these guys seem like a proper pairing - something we've lacked for a long time. A proper foundation.

Just need to get our full backs fully match fit and sharp now, with Dier becoming ever more commanding game on game in front of them and Lloris behind! Great base to work from.

I do love that arguably the Prem's best CM pairing plays LB and RB for the national team (I'm assuming Kompany and Vermwhalen usually take the CB spots - or they did...)

I'm pretty sure Toby has moved to CB for them recently, and Wilmots recently referred to him as first name on the team sheet.

Saw Spurs Statman mention that he makes a foul every 510 minutes. That's great numbers.

Hopefully Vertonghen, Rose and Walker pick up something from him. They make retarded fouls as if they were getting bonus payments from it.

Defending is all about partnerships and as people say Toby and Jan has in reality been as good as it looks on paper. But when you think about the best Championship winning sides they all had a rock of a pairing at CB which for the first time in years we have. Having one weak partner can make the other partner look worse than he is (look at how flimsy City look when Kompany is not there) which I think has impacted Jan but Toby has in a way been 1.5 signings for bringing Jan up to his full potential.

I think we are seeing the fine margins of how a little bit of rotation can help players.

Hes been making more little errors recently and turning off at set plays which i think is down to tiredness. This kinda shit happens when you play somebody so much in such a short period, theres no way you can be physically & mentally at 100%

Did my eyes deceive me, or did I really see him wrestling with, and throwing Dier to the ground, rather than concentrating on Huth, who was left unacceptably unmarked ?

Midweek him and Chadli got tangled up which led to the other headed goal.

If I was Poch I'd be looking at set piece marking having conceded two in two games. Not gonna give TA a hard time but he should be doing better on the corners.

I've been advocating some rotation in league matches for a while, just wheeling out Wimmer for cup matches isn't enough, CCV is the 4th defender so he needs matches as well. The problem is, it takes a bit of courage to do this because if we lose, it will be Poch getting all the stick for not going with his best CB pairing.

the best cb pairing wont exist if they are run into the ground tho. Look at vertonghen, he has had more time off than toby and he looks the stronger at the moment and hardly makes mistakes. Wimmer coming in from time to time will only make us stonger in the long run.

I thought, maybe harshly, that yesterday was his worst game for us. He looked tired, and his concentration (normally extremely high) was lapse. Don't want to knock him, as I think he's been one if not the best player this season, but I think playing him the cup game at the weekend was a mistake, and probably unfair on the guy. I wouldn't play him in the replay, unless he is furiously determined to wrong some rights.

I agree, and we should just throw caution to the wind.

Throw Wimmer & Dier in at CB, play Dembele & Bentaleb ahead of them, then let's see what some hungry & determined players can achieve.

Subbing off Tom Carroll engraged Toby, and it was that decision alone which made Toby lose his concentration for a split second, resulting in the goal.
