I actually think he's a greedy plum. A fantastic player, but a greedy plum nonetheless.

I dont think he is greedy but he certainly played it badly... he is worth £150k a week. If we are going to harp on about him being one of the best in the league then he should be paid as such... the issue is he went back on what he wanted and thats just well.. very Levyesque haha

It would be the sillyest thing to get rid in January and in my view i think there has got to be a way to retain him and get him to sign a contract. The guy has been so good this season and really professional... he could have sulked etc but when you look at him you can tell he does love it here...

Pretty sure the general view was we offered him the money he wanted and then him/his agent decided to ask for more just as we thought it was signed...

I understand that thats why I said that i dont think he was greedy but he played it badly, he didnt negotiate at the right value he felt but went back on the agreement - which was basically wrong for obvious reasons. Its just annoying because he with Verts is as solid as it gets and can be the foundation for the next two or three years.

I personally think the writing is on the wall with regard to Toby.

The club seems to have reached a point where they aren't going to go any further down the road with money.

Take it or leave it time.

People will, but I don’t think you can blame them. If he doesn’t want to sign a new contract there isn’t much you can do in the post bosman days.

At £25m he’ll have enough options. Reality is there is such a shortage of world class proven CB’s and even less at £25m. In the PL, outside of spurs you can look at VVD and that’s it. City pair arent as good and Kompany is on his last legs. He’d walk into any team, he’ll get big wages at whatever club he chooses, I just hope if he goes, he goes abroad.

Verts hasn't signed either we just extended his contract another year.

It's very unlike Daniel Levy to sign such a deal. Maybe the cheap transfer fee of £11.5 million made it an acceptable risk?

The player fees went out of control after the new deal and sales of neymar etc... £25m sell on fee for a 30 year old defender back then would be astronomical, still is very high.

Think fees will come back down a bit next season. Overall spending was down a lot last summer.

True but it still seems a bit short-sighted to me. Transfer fees have only ever go up, and if he did well (as he has) then even moreso. Seems very un-Levy.

It's not like he didn't try to get him to sign another contract. Would you prefer there was no extension and he left on a free in the summer?

I'm not disagreeing with you. I'm just surprised, because we very rarely lose out with contracts after Levy's vow after Campbell.

He must be extremely determined to leave. He's missed out on millions in wages he could've picked up the last couple of seasons had he signed a new deal.

It’s a really interesting own this because certainly the people around him took a gamble and it seemingly backfired on them big time. Now we are guaranteed 25million if he leaves and he still has to persuade someone to pay him what they wouldn’t do last summer. Under Jose I could have seen Utd signing him but now I struggle to see anyone else in the top six who will pay the fee and his wages given his age and injuries.
