Seems as slow as Fazio from what I've seen. If we're going to play a high line we need quick defenders. He isn't quick.
Well you could stick Yedlin in there - he's like lightning, but he'd be crap. Speed isn't the be all and end all, a good positional awareness can negate the need for speed to a large degree, and TA has it. Besides S-Hampton fans almost to a man (or woman) agree it's a bit of a myth about him being slow, certainly not sluggish like Fazio.

Not really a good indicator, considering when he was out, both Wanyama and Schneiderin were also out for long stretches.

Wanyama missed only 2 of the 12 games Alderweireld missed, while missing 3 games that Alderweireld played.

Schneiderlin missed 4 games of the 12 games Alderweireld missed, while missing 8 of the games that Alderweireld played.

Of those games Wanyama and Schneiderlin missed 2 of the same games in that 13 game stretch.

So I wouldn't say these can be classed as long stretches considering 8 of the 12 games Alderweireld missed had both Wanyama and Schneiderlin playing.

HAHA my first look at 'saintsweb' and..

"I always thought he was ****. Carried by Fonte."

My word.. they are hilarious. I'm going back for some morning reading.. :D
It's true though Fonte was the better defender last year...but once again a player signs for Spurs and therefore makes his bloody brilliant. I don't think he is that good of signing and is not an improvement on what we currently have. In my opinion we needed at least three players who are going to make the first team better...after signing number 3 I think it has last summer written all over it.

And before someone responds with who else then...not my job!

This seems like one of those puzzles, can you guess how many games each of the players played?

I think the worst thing of all of this really is the fact it is Spurs. He's a top, top class defender; at least he was with us last year, and could have done much better than Spurs. I really don't understand their appeal other than £££. Their set-up is pretty poor in comparison to Saints and the whole club just feels a bit superficial and "tin-pot". This is obviously reactionary, but a player of his quality last season should be playing CL, not Europa. It's a massive loss. I don't blame the board at all, unlike some knee-jerk reactions; I think if you read between the lines of what RK said in his press conferences it is obvious that AM simply did not want to deal with Saints (presumably because of the contract and low fee - cheaper to take legal action and pay compensation). I'm certain Toby wanted to stay at Saints at the end of the season but AM just wanted to flog him to the highest bidder (minus Saints). If people have to blame someone - blame AM. You really think the board were sitting on their thumbs waiting for Atletico to accept the 6.8m or however much the original loan contract specified? It seems to me that they pulled all the stops to get TA and AM were the ones to halt it. So be it. That's football politics. As a club, we will move forward and pursue other targets which we undoubtedly already are in talks with / are monitoring / going to talk to. The lack of faith on here is unbelievable with some.

An interesting stat to consider that, to me, shows just how important Alderweireld was to Southampton last season:

The saints recorded a goal difference of +21 in the 26 Premier League games in which he started, with that figure dropping to zero in the 12 games he did not.

so as long as he and vertonghen have a good understanding, Spurs "could" have just sorted out their back line?

Opening game could see trippier, alderweireld, vertonghen, and rose across the back,... with lloris in goal of course... "could" work :ninja:(y)

(everyone seems to think walker has lost his place due to injury)
