van der Vaart wouldn't get into our current team, and it's doubtful he'd even make a squad under Poch.

And I'm fairly sure he mouthed off about how much bigger Newcastle were than us when he joined them. It was ages ago though, so I might be wrong.
"I want to go to a club where I can win things"

They must be cursing him up there. Never won a thing nor, from that day onwards, have they even finished above us :ROFLMAO:

We should be looking to improve on deadwood like Alderweireld if we want to be taken seriously as title challengers.

Maybe because isn't and never was better than Walker.

I wouldn't go that far...

He was very zippy, had good delivery from memory and also excellent defensively. Was shakey first season or so but then really pushed on and was best right back in league at the time.

Walker has the advantage of being a good athletic, strong and tall, which is always a plus, but his delivery isn't as good and Carr occasionally would score some long-range screamers.

Stevie Carr was a very very good right back and suited to either a flat back four or as a wing back.

He did obviously sully things a bit with his dumb Newcastle comments, which is a shame as we always sang his name and loved him during his time with us.

Personally would find it tough to choose between them although have a lot of love for Walker as he's our current boy.

Whilst we're picking fantasy teams on here thought I'd have a go lol :playful:

Going for current players in prime (aside from King who we'll pretend didn't have dodgy knee and was still able to play).

Lloris

Alderweireld King Vertonghen

Walker Wanyama Modric Rose

Alli / Eriksen (can't decide!) Kane Bale

Carr isn't loved on here. No idea why.

Because of how he left. I fully understand that he was a very good RB for us, probably better than Walker, but he completely lacked respect for us after he left for Newcastle.

Agreed.

If not for his injuries there's no way we would have been able to keep Ledley. We were a mediocre mid table team with one world class player. He would have gone.

with Ledley, like some of the others now, if we had shown the ambition that we are currently showing, he would have stayed. But agree that with the weird up and down period he would probably have ended up at Barca.

And there's a lot of OTT revisionism going on with some of our old players (bar King). Carr was a good player in a shit team back then, let's be honest. He always stood out as a player, competent, quick and his crossing and end delivery was good that's about it. Wouldn't say he was defensively great, strong, as athletic as Walker, tall(?) not sure about that he was 5'9.

Played in an era where he was never the best right back in the league for example:

Gary Neville
Lauren
Danny Mills
Dan Petrescu
Lee Dixon

He was probably on par with Gary Kelly TBH

Also played in an era when the Premiership wasn't as competitive as it is now in intensity and physically demanding neither did he play in a team who were challenging for the title or play in the Champions League.

Carr scored 1 long range screamer against Man Utd, Walker scored a long range screamer against Arsenal and bent in a free kick against Blackburn in the same season.

Obviously hard to compare because different era's and all that but for me Walker is/was the better player.

Never said Carr was tall, might be how I phrased it meant to put is across that Walker had the advantage of being tall and more athletic (I remember Carr was a shorter player, didn't even realise as tall as 5'9 lol).

Good shout re: Dixon and Neville as yeah probably got a little over-excited and they were indeed better than Carr. Quite liked Kelly myself and not so sure about Danny Mills being better but he was also a good right-back.

Petrescu for me was more of a wing back / right winger, in his very successful time at Chelsea I don't think he ever played as a traditional right back in a flat back four (not sure if he did for Sheffield Wednesday?). A bit like Christian Ziege in that he was actually made for playing as wing back in a back three.
