Have to disagree with you there mate, the few times I watched Southampton I thought he played well at DM. No glitz and glam, no 35 yard passes to the wingers or intricate through balls, but he snuffed out attacks, made tackles and pressed opponents which is what we would ask of him
We must have watched different games, mate Thought he had an average season, meself.

Used to be more clinical.

His fresh legs and physicality could also help as a sub to hold on to leads, which became one of the disappointing themes of the season.

With all the money floating around the PL with the new TV deal, it doesn't sound that outlandish that Southampton may ask for that much, however I doubt anyone would pay it
If we are targeting him I could see this being one that happens later in the window. Southampton will obviously ask for an inflated price due to being pissed off but will eventually have to be reasonable as time ticks by due to his contact situation. Thats if he's got his heart set on us and us only of course.

I'm really finding the majority of the comments on here about him so strange.

The bang average comments, the issues that he is a red card waiting to happen, he's slow blah blah blah.

Let's evaluate this properly.

Poch has managed him, so knows far more than any of us on here.

Schneiderlin looked one of the best CM in the country paired with this guy, a lot of people blame LvG for his drop in form, but i think a lot has to do with not being partnered with Wanyama, who quietly went about his business when they were paired together.

Southampton put the second highest amounts on the board the second half of the season, which Wanyama was a big part of.

I completely see his physicallity different to others and a huge bonus, we are finally building a team that will go to war on the pitch, far too long we haven't had players to intimidate the other team or put it all on the line. This guy is a beast in stature, i don't care if he gets a red card a season, how frustrated does everyone get on here when Eriksen pulls out of tackle after tackle.

He's still young at 24 and in the last year of his contract, so max 15m should get him.

A no brainer for me, guy has lots of PL experience and ticks so many boxes for how we play, yet people say that they want Dendoncker and others over him who have zero expereince in the PL and playing under Poch. Yes they may be talented. But how can anyone really say Dendoncker is better in the PL than Wanyama?

I'm one of those who isn't exactly bothered about this link & think he's a bit of a disciplinary liability, but that's one heck of a fine post fella. Hard to argue against any of it! (y)

I think he would be an excellent signing

There is the danger it could unsettle us a little if it meant Dier was no longer first choice, some disharmony could start to emerge

But this is the test for a team with big ambition - the man management of the squad is vital, Everyone needs to stay happy and hungry and the playing time needs to reflect that

People need to know they will get opportunities but also that if their standards drop they can easily be replaced as first choice

I think Wanyama would represent a big move towards achieving this in the CM area

Indeed, but they also need to know that, when they get an opportunity & they play well, they won't instantly lose their spot when the player they replaced returns to fitness or from a ban etc.

That's what disappointed me with Wimmer. The lad did bloody well when he got a chance, didn't really put a foot wrong, but was instantly booted without so much as a second thought. Didn't Poch even say Vertonghen would walk straight back into the team when he was able to return?

I do understand the partnership that Vertonghen & Alderweireld have together, but I still think it was extremely harsh on Wimmer. Hopefully it's just a demonstration of Poch still being young & very much learning as he goes along.

If Poch, who has managed him, wants him - and I have no idea if he does - that's good enough for me. We desperately need backup for Dier, regardless.

Rocking the boat is inevitable if we're committed to strengthening the squad. The thing is with Dier, he can cover 3 positions and if say Wanyama is out performing him in central midfield, Dier can either cover injuries or fatigue at centre back or replace Walker when his bi-polar kicks in. I'm not overly convinced by Trippier... decent going forward but suspect defensively.

Yea I meant for my statement about the man management of squad being vital to a team with big ambition to highlight that rocking the boat will be inevitable as we increase the quality of our strength in depth

Realistically we need all, or at least as many, areas to backed up to the level Wimmer can cover our CB's

Poch will have to play the balancing act of giving everyone enough playing time, everyone happy and everyone hungry while still allowing some game time for our emerging youngsters

This time last year I really wanted him but I've not been as impressed this year. I don't know if it's because Schneiderlin made him look better than he is, or sub consciously I'm letting the 3 red cards partly make the decision for me, but I'm not too keen.

Having said that there are definitely some valid points people are making with the PL experience and his age. I didn't realise he had one year left so he should be fairly cheap as long as Saints aren't still bitter about 2 years ago. We desperately need someone to cover for Dier and considering Pochettino will know far more about him than me if he feels that he's the man then I won't be against it
