Did a club that has aspirations of winning the league & cups need a striker who is clearly work in progress or a striker who can come straight in and do the job?
There's never any guarantees with a signing, and our philosophy is to almost always sign 'work in progress' players- so get used to it.

As I said, 'almost always'. Toby and Sissoko are the main exceptions.

Why do you assume that we could've signed someone that would be amazing straight away?
We would even wanted someone who could come straight in and be amazing as a first teamer?

We had Kane and we played with one up top

I think for the sake of squad harmony and team building a work in progress was what we really wanted, someone to take the pressure off Kane rather than directly compete with him straight away

Admittedly I haven't read this whole thread so it might have already been said, but who amongst us really expected he'd have started as many games as he has for us so far? No-one. I don't think even Poch or Janssen expected this. Kane's injury has forced him to play more than and sooner than expected.

His best performances for us have been when he's played with Kane anyway, for example against Everton when, if not for Stekelenburg having a good game, he would have scored. With Kane back soon, Janssen can go back to learning from Kane and doing great in cameo/cup games to build into this team.

Lets not forget that most of our team are the same from last year so have a different level of understanding/work well together so anyone coming into this team would struggle to be on the same wavelength and be amazing from the start. He's not been dogshit by any stretch of the imagination but he's shown enough that I think it'll work out, just will need a little bit of time.

I'm really happy with him. I genuinely have no concerns, think he'll be a great player for us.

Same reason as why I was never worried about Lamela. You can see he has the talent but for whatever reason it's not clicking in front of goal. In these situations j just look for the desire and mentality and you know if a player has that then it's just a matter of time until they show their qualities over a consistent period of time.

I really like him too. Though I must admit his current lack of pace is a concern to me. You talk about "desire and mentality" - didn't Bobby have those as well? I don't recall him failing for lack of trying.

I am happy we've got in, don't think I'm not a fan. I would love more pace though, and hope if it becomes necessary to get an extra striker in, that we go for Callum Wilson. Excellent finisher, PL proven and recovered very well from his long term injury.

Bobby had no physical ability to influence a game and was completely reliant on others to service him

He didn't have the right mentality either in my eyes - he looked like he broke to me. His confidence went down, then down further and then down again and he eventually started hiding on the pitch in my opinion

If he had the right mentality and desire he would have been stronger and more confident and not shyed away from the challenge like he ultimately did

I think a lot of people mistake his nice personality for having the right mentality

My concerns with Janssen are his lack of pace and his lack of fitness. I like him but i dont think we should start him much more. He's just not close to ready yet whatsoever. Needed a year, IMO. Unfortunately, we couldnt afford him such a luxury so now we have to worry about overexposure and his confidence.

Soldado was old so we couldn't really afford him much time to settle in. Janssen has time on his hands and is much more of a raw talent than soldado who was the finished article but just lacked premier league experience.

Personally I think Janssen's pace is fine. He's not the fastest, granted, but he can cover 15-20 meters pretty quick. He's a tenacious motherfucker as well. He'll be fine, he's strong for someone of his stature, something soldado really lacked in this league. Soldado's link up play was great but his hold up play was poor. Janssen is great at both. He just needs to get in the box a bit more but he's still getting used to the team dynamics.

There's a lot of good stuff to focus on too. WBA fans saying he absolutely bullied their defenders physically, which is something they very rarely see.

And they're right. He absolutely bullied them. He sets himself up against defenders in such a way that it's really hard to defend, and with his strength he becomes a real handful. He's also got a knack for coming away with the ball in tight situations - moreso than you might expect otehrwise.

Sure...he hasn't posed a major goal threat yet, but he's provided an outlet and gives the attacking players the time and space to run into dangerous areas. It's invaluable to the team to have coming from a player that's having a bit of a time finding the back of the net - staying involved and making things happen for the other players.

Better to get a striker that has the potential to be 8/10 than someone who has never been or will ever be more than 6/10 - as would be the case if you brought a striker in just to 'do a job'.

We want a striker who has the potential to push Kane not someone who will never be more than a back up.

Janssen has shown he has the ability to score goals last season and for the Netherlands, now it's just about letting him adjust to the league.

http://www.fourfourtwo.com/features/vincent-janssen-dutchman-wooing-arsenal-liverpool-and-manchester

Worth a read, from last summer.

of note "Janssen didn't score in his first 367 minutes for AZ in the league" and still ended up Eridivise top scorer....

He scored 20 goals post Christmas, given that he's moved to a much harder league it's going to take a little while to settle. His hold up play is some of the best I've seen in a long time, awareness good and better than average passing. His recent goal for the Netherlands was quality and if he scored against Everton on opening day we may have a much more confident player on our hands.

People need to give him time, bloody "Plastics" on his back after 7 appearances some as sub FFS :banghead::banghead:

I think VJ needs to be more selfish with his positioning. He's not where I'd want my main striker to be a lot of the time, when an attack is building. I know with our current system of play, there is a lot of interchange between the SC and midfielders, but i'd like to see him in the box more. Especially where Alli keeps popping up!

It'll come, he's got talent. But it's a new system, new league etc etc. I wasnt expecting much from him at all to start with. As above, he's in at the deep end which wasn't expected. I think he's a good player and had shown some really clever play at times.

I still can't believe people are not really happy with Janssen, 17m, 22 years old, first season in the EPL and leading our line well, look at our league position. He is a way bigger step up than anyone we could have called on last year as back up. I honestly believe his hold up play is the best in the league as a striker and he has bullied both Palace and WBA CB's. It's like people expect us to sign Suarez as a back up to Kane or something. We are winning games, we can go top today ok for a brief time if we win and are doing pretty well in the Champs league. We also have the excitment of pairing Kane and Janssen for future games. Lack of positivity from some people about him is baffling.
