Nope - Viduka used to do excellently what Vinnie is starting to do, pinning defenders around the box, so team-mates can play off him. He was really superb at that in his prime.
Viduka was a quality player. I think Janssen will come good soon enough needs a goal to calm his shooting down and I'm sure they will flow. Needs something before Kane is fit again!

Janssen had a good game last night, great hold up play and some nice touches. Was unlucky not to get on the score sheet.

Fitness & getting to know our system / our players are the main issues but he's getting there. We probably wont see the best of him until next season.

Don't understand why he didn't aim that header down - surely you learn that in nursery school. Even if it was on target the keeper would've saved it.

I think there is some collective blindness in this thread based on hope and positivity which is fine. He has done relatively poorly so far. His hold up play has been good but he doesn't get in goal scoring positions, can't seem to time his runs properly and doesn't seem to be able to finish. Obviously this doesn't mean this will always be the case and I for one am hopeful he will improve, but thus far he has been poor overall. There is reason Poch hooked him last night.

I'm recalling it from memory having only seen it once, but iirc the the ball was slightly too high and a bit behind him - he actually had to manufacture quite a lot of the pace and direction himself. In that scenario it's very hard to direct the ball down. The best you can do is try to hit the target, which he did.

He hit the bar, that's not on target. It was right on his head and he should've been able to direct it down, and somewhere other than straight at the keeper.

He just needs a goal to settle him down, then everything will fall into place.

Thats what was said just before he scored against Gillingham then he scored.

In my view and ive said this throughout the thread, our play is slow and he isnt facing the goal so much which is a problem. He always has his back to goal and i dont know whether its because the three behind him are not playing to his strengths or our tactics arent conduciv3 to bringing the best iut of him.

One thing i have noticed is he is painfully slow and does run like he has a bunjee jump rope attached to him which makes me think we should be crossing the ball in alot more to suit his strengths.

I think there's 50/50 cause for optimism and pessimism with this kid

So far we'd all have to admit that he's been sub par

He's a striker and he needs to score goals and he hasn't done that. He's missed a fair few excellent chances and he's not really got himself in to enough good positions, often runs off side and even more often looks completely unfit and unable to keep up with our style of play

The reasons to be pessimistic include his lack of pace, his current lack of fitness, his inability to finish so far and the history we have with Soldado failing to get off to a good start and then never really clicking from there (with Kane coming back soon Janssen will find his chances limit and you feel he needed to fill his boots while he had a great opportunity to)
He runs off side too often and or doesn't read the through ball pass of a Lamela, Erkisen or an Alli to get in to a great position

To high light his finishing - his misses against Everton and Palace were both terrible. One cost us two points and the other would have had Wanyama not saved the day and he fluffed so many efforts against Gillingham in a low pressure game. Even last night you feel a confident natural finisher would have put that header away

I'm making him sound like a terrible buy I know

but.....Reasons to be optimistic....

He isn't Soldado, just because Soldado failed to improve after a poor start does not mean Janssen can't, he's younger, stronger and has more to his game.

He's strong, he clearly has the strength to be successful in our league and his hold up play and some of his link play has already looked very good. There's no reason to believe this won't continue to improve the more he trains and plays with his teams mates and gets up to speed with our system

Fitness can be improved - he's clearly never had to play the game at this intensity before and he's struggling to sustain his efforts. Diet and performance over time will surely bring him up to spend and this will stop being an issue

His finishing ability is there, he just hasn't showcased it for us. He scored a lot of goals in Holland, scored a screamer on international duty the other day and even during preseason for us some of his finishing looks top class. So it's not that he's a bad finisher it's that he needs the confidence/composure to bring his finishing ability to the first team environment

Poch even managed to make Ricky Lambert look like a decent EPL striker - Imagine what he can do to a top Dutch international given time

Overall I'm still very confident that he will come good and I think he should be given more time to settle in before people start judging. I can understand the frustration and I think if any fan were being honest and not blindly optimistic and supportive they'd agree that thus far he's been disappointing but equally I think if any fan were being honest and not knee jerk and emotional they'd agree he's shown his potential and he's far from a lost cause

Bloody hell you are harsh.

It's not harsh. Right on his head, six yards out, middle of the goal. He should score there, or at least make the keeper pull off a worldie. He could've guided it back where it came from and the keeper would've had no chance.

Please watch it again. The cross was behind him. He had to lean backwards to even get his head on it and therefore his head could only head the ball upwards. So couldn't put pace on the attempt. Thought he did well to beat the keeper, unlucky to hit the bar. (y)

Not the old 'we don't play to his strengths line'

Havnt seen that one for a little while in here

I like making unlikely predictions so I'm going to say that next season Vincent will be our first choice striker.

I thought the last 2 games Vincent has gotten better each game. He looks to be coming out of his shell a bit more and is creating open chances for others as well as taking opportunities, which is something you don't do if you aren't confident in yourself or are still new to a team (which has been the case with him so far up to the WBA game) and want to do more for others since they have more of an understanding of each other and how the team plays. So I have been pleasantly encouraged by his last 2 performances and I feel he may well get his 1st open play goal this coming weekend.

This lack of fitness thing is rubbish. At this stage of the season he should be up to speed. An apt turn of phrase there, he is just slow, nothing to do with fitness.

Thats not true

They are clearly two separate incidents

Yes he is too slow

But currently he's also not fit enough for the system we play

The latter can he worked on and improved the former cannot really but as with Ricky Lamert poch can improve his football iq and help him mould his game so that his lack of pace is less of a hinderance

Ie to anticipate play better so that initial yard in your head is his
